Concussion / brain aneurism in bunnies? U/D she's fine

Post by NSD on Wed Dec 29, 2010 12:21 am

Do / can bunnies get concussions or brain aneurisms (sp?) from accidents? Josephine just ran head first into a door TWICE at her fastest speed.

I'm dropping her off at the vet for monitoring, but does anyone know if such things are common in bunnies?

I'm a bit nervous because she hates the vet (and may play up because she's at the vet) but I have an appointment today I can't cancel or reschedule so I want someone watching her while I'm gone.

Bruce is going too to keep her company.

I feel like such a bad bunny mother!

I don't think so because when my cat was a kitten she used to run around like crazy and i've lost count how many times she wacked her head into the doors and walls. I don't think it's anything to worry about she might just have a bit of a headache. These things can't be helped it happens I felt bad when Tiger did it but you can't stop them.

Goodness, I hope she is okay.

Ive never heard of that hun, but you are doing the right thing getting her watched for a few hours.

I hope that she is okay.

You are so NOT a bad bunny mummy. They love to test our nerves the the limit, its what they learn as kits I'm sure.

Gentle nose rubs for Josephine and hugs for you. x x x x

I hadn't heard of it, but it is possible. I've just read a paper on it, which I won't put on here, cos it's quite upsetting. (Pm me if you want to read it)

Did she pass out at all, or stop breathing? Apparently there is a response in the eyes if concussion has occurred, so it's likely the vet will check those. Good luck and lots of vibes for Josephine - you're a brilliant bunny mummy, it's the buns - they are here to drive us all loopy!

That sounds alarming. I am sure they can injure themselves like we can, but hopefully she will be OK.

What did the vet say?

Thanks for your responses guys. I just assumed that bunny brains would have similar reactions to human brais? And I have heard far too many horror stories about people falling and hiting their heads only to die of a brain injury a few hours later so I panicked a bit.

She fell backwards initially, but then managed to get up and run into her favourite box. She was more quiet than normal after the accident and maybe a bit disorientated so the vet told me to bring her in.

She was at the vet for most of the day, they checked her every few hours for signs of concussion, head tilt etc. They checked her eyes like you said Jay and did a few tests to make sure she could stand up straight etc. She got less disorientated as the day went on and she's seeming much more normal this morning, thank goodness.

I'm glad I took her to the vet, at least I know she was in good hands.

Bruce was a suitably terrified companion for my girl. The nurse commented that he ate most of the food offered to Josephine. Laughing I told her - now you know how much I struggle to get him to lose weight!

So glad to hear Josephine is fine. Very Happy

So funny about Bruce - he obviously wasn't stressed at all and was enjoying the extra food! Laughing

Oh no, he's the only bunny I've heard of who will eat despite sheer terror. He pants and shakes from fear whenever he's at the vet - when there's food, he'll take a moment out of shaking to eat and then start it again! He's such a pig Laughing
