Meloxidyl/Metacam Empty Meloxidyl/Metacam

Post by Dawnbunny Fri Mar 25, 2011 8:56 pm

Hi,

Just got to say first I love this forum....was really worried and then checked the search engine and can see how others have given this to their buns doses etc and this has put my mind at rest...

Poor Pumpkin his tooth is causing problems he only had a dental 4 wks ago and already it has grown down to his lower gum where there is no tooth as it was taken out..... It looks like this one will have to be taken out it just wont stop growing and this is the fastest it has ever grown back...

He has now developed a twitch in his cheek to his eye, we are giving him Meloxidyl for the next week to see if this calms his twitch down... the vet will look at him again....

Sorry to hear that, but yes Metacam is perfectly safe as a pain relief form for rabbits and pretty effective (and if your lucky you might get a rabbit that likes the taste too).

The tooth that is causing the problem has nothing to wear against and as you've found, because they grow continually to combat wear and tear as the rabbit goes about it's daily foraging, this means it has nothing to keep it in check.

Is it a molar or incisor?

Vibes for Pumkin, sorry to hear he's having trouble. Metacam was a Godsend to my last bun who had arthritis, I hope it eases things for Pumpkin.

My bun Felix has a peg tooth (the little teeth behind their incisors which help their bottom teeth butt against something) which will not stop growing. He has had it removed a couple of times and now I have to clip it every so often when I think he needs it.

Its a molar... the vet has been worried about taking it out as she is not sure if she can get the root.

Pumpkin did like the taste , he was a very good boy when taking it.. Im sure the banana afterwards helped also Very Happy

I did worry it might be a molar as with incisors they usually take the opposing tooth at the same time as the damaged one, but it is a more complex operation with a molar, because as you say, the root runs so deep into the jaw. On the plus side, they don't grow back as fast as incisors seem to when tissue does get left behind but it can weaken the jaw dependant on how far the root goes and how much force is needed to remove it.

Little sweetheart, please give him a love from me and I hope he is bettter soon. I get so distressed when I read about cases like this I just want to to lash out at those responsible. I don't think I'm alone there though.

Hi,

Havent been on the forums just lately as Pumpkin isnt doing to well ... The metacam hasnt made much difference and for the past 24 hrs he is now gastric Sad I have managed to get some greens in him...

In a way him becoming gastric has taken the decision out of my hands and he has to now have this tooth reomoved... We have been here before but he is older now 5 yrs and its only been a month since his last anesthetic so Im worried, even the vet seems worried ..... But we have no choice and just have to go for it tomorrow morning ... just praying he will be ok....

Hi Katie,

Vet had a look at him tonight again and the base of his tooth seems to be bleeding a little... she is just worried it wont come out ....

We have stopped the Metcam for tonight to give his kidney/liver a rest and depending if she gets the tooth out will look at antibiotics /painkiller again tomorrow.

Pumpkin is eating some greens bless him.... oh well only another 12 hrs to go and he is back again... hope he will be ok..

Thanks for your best wishes Katie.

Sorry to hear of the problems you're having. Sad

I hope he is getting on OK, and you too - it's awful waiting for news when they're at the vets.

Hope you get positive news.

Pumpkin is ok... very sleepy ... she got the whole tooth out... I can have it when I pick him up!!!!! Yuk ... not sure I want it...

He has to be there till 4pm to make sure he is ok... but all seems good so far. Vet is putting him on antibiotics and painkiller and he will go back for a check up in a week if all goes well...

Poor little man... cant wait to go and get him ....

Aww I'm glad he's okay!
Give him lots of noserubs from me Smile Well done Pumpkin.

I'd be so fascinated if the vet gave me the tooth afterwards, I'm weird like that though Laughing
