Spay/neuter help please!! Empty Spay/neuter help please!!

Post by Thumper2001 Fri Feb 03, 2012 10:57 am

A woman in my mum's work has 2 pet shop bought rabbits. When she bought them, she was told they were 2 girls. Nuh-uh No Vet told them yesterday one is a boy and one is a girl No I don't know how old they are. They think the female is pregnant and she is majorly nesting. I know they nest even when not pregnant, but let's face it, what are the chances she's not??

She is putting them in to get spayed and neutered over the weekend. My personal feeling is that if she is pregnant then they should leave her be, but that's just my opinion. I don't know what she will do as I don't know her.

Anyhoo... the vet has said to separate them after they are done? Is this the right thing to do? Don't you risk the bond then?

Any thoughts greatly received!!

The hard thing is the vet may well have decided to neuter doubly as a neuter/abortion. I think you need to make this clear to your friend so she knows what she is doing.

After the neuters - they may as well stay together as if the female is done the ongoing fertility of the male.

TBH I'd be tempted to just get the boy neutered for now. I've read stories before about girls going in to be spayed, being pregant, and the vet having to then stitch them back up again but often the babies don't survive. I think if it was me I'd wait on her for a couple more weeks just to be sure, because I'd hate it if I sent her to be spayed and she was pregnant.

Could they get a second cage and have them next door to each other? Then once they are done go back with each other. Even if she isn't pregnant now she soon will be if he's now fully sexually mature.

I said to my mum to tell her. I wouldn't know the woman if I fell over her in the street Hmmm

This is probably a stupid question, but won't the babies be all messed up if they are brother and sister?

I couldn't understand why they were separating them if they are both being done, unless they are worried about her getting hurt.

When I went to the Rabbit Rescue to meet Dougal, they had some chincilla rabbit babies in there (the male Florence nearly got bonded with) and their Dad was also their brother Shocked He was from another litter, not sure what happened to his Dad, but when he reached maturity he mated with his mum. The babies were absolutely fine, although one had been squashed at some point and had a flat back, but they think that was from a fight of some sort, or she got sat on. Genetically though you'd never have known. It was sort of creepy though.

It is a bit weird but I hate the thought of them being killed Sad

I have Thumper's cage, but I don't know if I can part with it Crying or Very sad I have her run too that would do. But if they are both being done, I'd be inclined to just leave them together scratch

My main concern if you lent them Thumpers cage would be when they returned it there may be a baby bunny in it.

Yes I'm apt to agree with this to get the boy neutered first.

There are so many rabbit rescues full of unwanted bunny babies because of pet shops and the fact they can't sex rabbits correctly No

I've just offered them Thumper's cage Crying or Very sad I'm not entirely made up about it but it's the right thing to do.

The lady needs it because the buns are still together just now Shocked She knows to keep the cages side by side so they can see each other.

It's gona be a miracle if she's not pregnant! Hmmm

Make it clear not to give it back with a bunny in it. Unless you want one of them that is!

Do you know what breed the bunnies are?

I don't think they are going to take it, someone else has offered her a dog crate.

I couldn't tell you! My mum is a bit useless No She can't even tell me how old they are Shocked

I hope so! But surely they must be before the vet is willing to neuter them both? I think?

My mum drives me mad doing this. Phones to ask for help and/or advice. Takes an age to tell the story, and you still only get half the information you need to help!!! Laughing
