Jacob the Jackdaw / Update May 2nd :-)
He's in our back garden and he can't fly so we are now going to have to feed and water him and hope
the cat or Sparrowhawk doesn't get him. ( more worry)
We have had a Crow before that we looked after as we can't take them to wildlife hospitals as they don't
cope with being caged or put in an aviery as we rang for advice for Brendon our Crow.
I'm hoping his wing is bruised as it will get better but if it's broken well it's not looking good

I can't find him and I have searched the back garden so I presume he either hit a window and was a bit stunned or his wing was slightly bruised as he seems to have gone
Hmmm I named him as well

Re: Jacob the Jackdaw / Update May 2nd :-)
We have found Jacob the Jackdaw again he is living behind the storage shed in the back garden and he's not looking good. He definitely has a broken wing and I am concerned about him with this snow that we keep having he is also very vulnerable grounded like this.
Mike has rang the Wildlife Haven in Thirsk for advice but it's on the answer phone so they will no doubt ring us back when they get time. We rang them when we had Brendon the injured Crow and they were so lovely and helpful it's a Family run rescue in Thirsk.

Aw, poor Jacob - I hope something can be done to help him. Would it be worth putting a box filled with straw out there, with a hole in its side so he could hop in if he wanted to?

Well the first one The Wildlife Haven have yet to ring us back .
We rang the RSPB they don't come out to injured birds you have to ring the RSPCA
The RSPCA Darlington only seem to take calls Monday to Friday so we rang Newcastle RSPCA
and they said if it's still around on Monday ring them back and they may come out to it , otherwise ring a vet.
Most vet's are closed now round here.
I feel very sad

Re: Jacob the Jackdaw / Update May 2nd :-)
The Wildlife Haven have just rang back and we are going to try to catch the Jackdaw and put it in a large pet carrier or a puppy pen if we have a spare in the attic , she said don't put hay in as it will get caught in the wing, vet bed is fine and keep him warm, and he needs something to perch on so he can wash and keep his bottom clean. He will eat almost any scraps, high energy foods like cheese, she said if they can splint the wing for him they will.
They have 36 injured animals in at the moment and a baby otter cub she said and they are only family run, it's such a shame especially when they are so helpful and willing to help unlike the RSPB and RSPCA
I know it's just a bird to a lot of people but it's a living creature that has emotions and feels pain just like us.

Re: Jacob the Jackdaw / Update May 2nd :-)
Update on Jacob 15:54 pm
Mike's got him, we have a net that Mike made to catch small injured birds and we caught him in that. He flapped his injured wing so that seems a good sign. Got him in a large pet carrier with some carpet in and a wood rabbit tunnel made smaller for him to stand on.
Mike's gone to get some meat and hi energy food for him. At least he is in the warm and safe. It look's as if it is going to snow heavy again soon and the snow is still on the ground and I don't think he would have survived another night in it.
Safe at last.

This is it Monroe the feral cat does now and then come in the back garden and if we see him we do shout at him as we don't want to encourage him to come in the back garden and he doesn't come in very often as he sems to know, but he may do in the middle of the night and then we have Kestrals and Sparrowhawks so he is a vulnerable while he is injured like this.

Aww Thank's Rob we just love all animals and birds and don't like to see them hurt and if they are we just try to help them best we can
it's very rewarding when we can, upsetting when we can't .
Mike drove all the way to my friend in Leeds who has rescue Hedgehogs from Preston in Lancashire once with a very sick hedgehog that we had and it died about 5 minutes away from her house and he had to come back with it and he buried it in the garden he was so upset.

Re: Jacob the Jackdaw / Update May 2nd :-)
I remember a story of a chap who saved a seagull who hurt it's wing and he brought it into his house and nursed it and set it free when it was better
that seagull never forgot the chap and stalked him everywhere he went and attacked him as the bird obviously thought the man trapped it
so although it's rewarding sometimes if you get the wrong one you could have a psycho on your hands

He looks quite relaxed in that carrier - do you get the impression he is just a youngster?
