Oat, wheat and Barley hay Empty Oat, wheat and Barley hay

Post by BugsBunny Tue Jul 02, 2013 9:39 pm

I am just wondering if anybody uses this for their rabbits and if it is in fact good for them? Dougal has an excellent quality Timothy hay but wanted to try a few different ones at some point. Amanda has been helpful with this for me and I know he likes a bit of ings , he does not eat tons of it but has nibbles at it and seems to like it, he likes Timothy and Rye in the same way, bit here and there and he loves burns green oat hay. I was just wondering about the oat, wheat and barley as I saw it on hay experts, I know they do samples so I might buy a sample pack, then he can have the brown paper bags which I hear they love. I do not know where to get brown paper bags nowadays, where do you lot get yours? I also wish they would sell that oat hay in much bigger bags, Dougal is very much looking forward to seeing Sparkys humum again , especially since she is bringing yummy hay again and thanks again for that Hun.

What types of hay do the humums and hudads bunnies like. What is yuour buns favourite humums and hudads? sorry if I have posted in wrong section or if a post has already been up about all of this.

We are ings and timothy and rye fans. It is so good our vet asked where we were getting it from on Bruce's last dental trip. We have tried the oat barley and wheat mix which was enjoyed, but it is very expensive.

mine mainly get ings hay or some other nice smelling timothy hay [am i the only one who smells the bags in the shop?] they do love that oat hay, i get it from hay experts. i use it more as a treat than everyday hay tho. so smaller bags isn't too bad as its pretty cheap.

Primark use paper bags if that helps

You're in the right section Smile

My two will eat most hays but have dramatically gone off the hay for pets Timothy and Rye, for some unknown reason!

They love Ings, burns green oat and Alfalfa King Timothy hay. The alfalfa king Timothy is incredible quality. Really long, thin green strands. You could take someone's eye out with it Laughing My SIL's other half is a farmer, he saw it in my house one day and couldn't believe the quality.

Molly seems to favour the Alfalfa King over the Ings but Junior prefers the Ings. The green oat is their treat hay I give them when I need to leave them unattended in the living room. I know they won't move when they're nomming on that Smile

I have to say we're a pretty boring household here in terms of hay. Willow and Mo get farm bale hay, it costs me £3.50 a bale and will last them and the guinea pigs a few months at least (and they eat colossal amounts!). It's honestly just as nice as the Ings hay and is lovely and green, dust free and smells so fresh when you break a wedge open. I got very lucky Very Happy

I buy them Timothy Hay or those Vitakraft Herby Hays as a treat. I always grab them a bag of the Green Oat at Wilkos when I'm there too - they love that. They get Readigrass three or four times a week, and they have lots of dried herbs too, so forage-wise they get a good mix.

Willow has very good teefies and Mo's not had an problems so far, and he has a tiny, snubby face. Fingers crossed!!

Dougal so loves his western timothy, smells good and is so green, that is stalky too. That is whyhis teeth are so good as he eats a lot of it too.

I only gave Dougal a small handful of the oat a day with the sample Sparkys humum brought over and he eats it uo right away. I keep meaning to ask our local pet shop f they can get lovely green oat hay too. Dougal loves the green stuff. I buy him the 4.5 kilo bags, it last him a decent amount of time as it is well packed in and you get a lot of it, it is expensive if you have quite a few buns but great for 1 and he just gobbles on it all day. He has readigrass too, atm he has a bit every day with his meds to get them down him, otherwise now his stomach is okay with it he has it a few times a week as a treat.

mmmmmmmmmmm herbs, Dougal says nom nom nom, he loves herbs. Very Happy  you know I am pretty sure yesterday he was smiling , he so looked like he was when he had had some herbs and he lead down and flopped over. He loves flopping on his side then looking over at me all proud and as if to say thanks humum slave.

We have the Alfalfa King Timothy hay it's fantastic but Pets@Home are having problems at the moment with their supplier and so it's hard to come by. Our local PAH has got us some from another branch as we can't get it and our buns love it Smile
I have to laugh at Cleo and Dotty as Cleo will get a strand out of the hay rack and Dotty takes it off her and then they end up sharing it Laughing

Laughing Laughing Laughing  Dotty is very clever, let her do the work and she can then share it, why should she get her nose in it? if only we could do this with our humen Laughing and also  it is very cute, can toy try anf video them doing this for me some time and post it up please?

I have looked at pictures of the alfalfa king hay, it does look very good, it looks a lot like the Timothy hay Dougal has. He would love it with being green and stalky and plenty of seed heads like the western one, he loves the seed heads.

Hay experts do Alfalfa king, do you not get it from there when p@h do not have it?

Oh and Dougal does not seem as keen on soft hay either, he prefers it stalky and has to be green for king Dougal.

The hay experts appear to be having the same trouble. The alfalfa king hay is good. I used to to order when it was on 3 for 2, but this almost never happens now!The best thing you can do for a bun is give them a mix of hays as the different lengths and textures give their teeth a better work out. I feed multiple hays just as I feed multiple pellets because it gives them some variety in their diet and also it stops the buns from getting too picky which means in an emergency they should accept any hay I buy them! As a result all the nice hays I occasionally buy get greeted with great excitement. Hide some in the middle of the hay rack and all the other hay get pulled out in excitement at getting at the new nommy stuff.

Oh I know! It's an absolute pain!! I'm trying to drag the last of the bag out as slowly as possible but I think they are missing it :(I've replaced it with oat hay (which is really their treat hay) and hay for pets Timothy and Rye that we got delivered by accident last time. They really aren't loving it but at least they're still getting their Ings too!

I wish P@H would hurry up and get it back in!

Laughing Molly and Junior play tug of war with it too Laughing

Re Hay Experts, when you add the delivery charge to the price of the hay it is ridiculously expensive. I can't justify paying that for a 1.8kg bag of hay Sad

You can get 4.5kg from hay for pets for cheaper Shocked

Our brands are different here in the USA. Rory devours Western Timothy hay constantly! We've never had a bunny eat so much hay. He loves it so much that we have 3 places in the house where he can enjoy eating it. He's so spoiled!

Dougal is very spoilt too with his western Timothy, he loves it and he has hay in different piles all around his room, he is another spoilt bunny and he is a king after all Laughing

Oh and the putting the different hay in the middle of his other is a good idea, I put a fenugreek crunchie insid a clean old sock yesterday and it was so funny watching Dougal trying to get it out Laughing , I also scatter some pellets n now and again and herbs too for him to forage them out. I also used a plastic pot that I had some baileys pudding in, I washed it and tipped it upside down and put pellets under so he could pull the tub off the top of it or knock it over and he has a ball I made from toilet roll tube that I put treats in. He actually ran around with the ball in his mouth 2 days ago and sat staring at me with it in after he had emptied it, it was so cute and I thouight I was filming in but the button on our camera you have to press in a bit harder or it wont record so it did not record. I was well gutted.

I hate it when site charge a lot for postage, I get Dougals from petsupermarket online as they do not charge postage for anything, it is great and way cheaper. I think yer right when you say it is not worth on hay experts once you have to pay postage too.,
