I'm worried about Flopsy.

Post by BellaPickleFlopsyLily on Tue Aug 06, 2013 11:21 pm

Recently I have been noticing Flopsy has been pooing and having accidental wee's outside of the litter trays - It has been going on about a week or so. Originally I thought it could be the hot weather and Flopsy being too tired to have the energy to make it to the litter trays - what with it being so hot previously I did not think much of it.

The heat has cooled down and unfortunately I am still finding wee's out of the litter tray, Not all the time but occasionally. I know it is his wee and not Lily's because his has quite a strong kind of antibiotic smell - it is hard to explain but it is his.

I don't know what it could be really, A UTI possibly or maybe his kidney functioning could be failing. He was diagnosed with Kidney disease late May and had been doing OK on the fortekor - He had some bloods done in June time I believe and although there was no improvement , they were still the same.

I am so worried, I thought he was doing well.

I'm going to try and contact John tomorrow and hopefully something can be done. I just don't want him in any pain or discomfort, He does look quite frail now which is heartbreaking.

Any suggestions would be great, I will be putting puppy pads down with towels on top of the second level now to soak up any accidents.

I think the best thing would be for Flopsy to have a urine test Jack which I would think John will want to do, is she an old bunny as she could have a touch of arthritis as sometimes they do little puddles on the floor as they are less active and don't always want to move .

I hope she is ok Jack, sending her Vibes xxxxxxxx
and you a hug as I know how worried you will be Hugs Hugs

Puppy pads are great as we use them for the older buns Thumbs Up

Is he on any pain relief, Jack? I just wonder if he is getting a bit older and slower whether that might help him if he does have a touch of arthritis or general aches and pains.

Thanks for all your replies, I have only just come on Wave

Sparky wrote:Is he on any pain relief, Jack? I just wonder if he is getting a bit older and slower whether that might help him if he does have a touch of arthritis or general aches and pains.

Yes he is on Metacam - 0.5ml twice a day and then he is on 1/2 a fotekor tablet ounce a day for his Kidneys.

I just remembered today that when John did his last X-ray back in May time that he did mention something about seeing some arthritis. I just think I forget that he is getting older and he is an 'old' bunny for the problems he has (Dental, kidneys etc) as he generally looks so young and active in hiself.
However more recently I have noticed he is slowing down an awful lot and tends to sit out in the run in position that my Bella used to sit in when she had arthritic pain. It is hard to explain but it's a strange position. To me it looks as if he has arthritis in his hind feet, Obviously I don't know that for sure though.

I just don't know if his metacam can be increased anymore as John did say something about if the dose is increased too much it can start to affect the kidney function and cause problems with his kidney meds. I think John did say something about Tramadol (?). I just don't know how much more he can be drugged up. I am going to speak to John about increasing his pain relief and anti-inflammatory as I want him to be more comfortable. I am a little confused at dosages though, John follows the dosages that metacam follow but I prefer to follow the ones on a 1ml syringe so when I try and explain to him what dose he is on , John is a little confused as to what I am on about. Embarassed  Please could somebody convert 0.5ml for me? I am not overly sure I am even making sense but I hope somebody will understand what I am trying to find out. Laughing

I am thinking now it is more likely he is suffering with pain and discomfort from arthritis rather than having a UTI or something going on as it is on and off the wee wee accidents etc. I am going to look in to some of those low sided large planter tray things that I have seen in the garden centres and put 2 or 3 around the shed so he has plenty of points to go to. I may try and get hold of a large indoor cage bottom too. I will be altering the shed so It is more suited for his needs.

You should also discuss glucosamine with John. It can really make a difference for arthritic buns. There are other herbal remedies that work wonders for horses so it may well be worth researching them as well.

just thought I'd let everyone know , We're seeing JC in the morning and we'll go from there. Flopsy and Lily will be having their combined jabs as they're due the end of the month.

Vibes please that Flopsy has gained weight , and doesn't need a dental ( he's not had one for about two months). I just want his pain under control.

It's been confirmed that Flopsy has a very stiff back end and the arthritis in his hind hocks is really quite bad. Johns increased his Metacam to 10kg (on the big syringe) which equals 0.7ml twice a day.

We're going to see how he does on the 0.2ml increased dosage until Tuesday and if not too much improvement we're going to put him on Tramadol as well as his metacam etc.

Fortunately no Dental is needed , which is a big relief. However he does have a small spur so hopefully we can get that worn down on his sensitive pellets and SS He does occasionally eat hay and grass now which should hopefully sort that out. I won't stop trying.

Lily is fine , passed her MOT and both had their combi jabs. Need to take Pickle in for his the next week or so.

We've got to keep Flopsy on one level now so I'll be taking their second level out this, afternoon. Also picked up one of those potting trays with the large low opening so he won't have to struggle and jump into the 32L trays. We're also going to saw a low front onto them.

Thank you Sparky , I really hope we can get this pain sorted and Flopsy can be bouncing about like the other buns.

I stupidly got stung by a bee earlier on my finger so haven't made a start on the shed yet but will in the next couple of hours.

It was my first ever bee sting and it wasn't even a full sting as I had nothing left in my finger but it hurt enough! I was putting the guinea pigs bottles on their runs and put my hand down to lean on the grass and little did I know that there was a bee under my finger! it flew away after Shocked

It's Flopsy and Lily's second anniversary today , Lily's second gotcha day but they've spent it sulking after their vet visit and vaccinations Rolling Eyes Laughing .

We use those potting tray's Jack for the old buns with arthritis and disabled and they love them and they can still sit comfortable on them a lot of our customers have now bought them also as they think they are great for two rabbits. Flopsy will like that.

Poor Grace was very bad with arthritis in her front legs and we had her on Metacam and Baby Saint and Helen are on it as well.

We also had Grace on Arthri Aid that Cheryl told us about it has Glucosamine in it as it helps with joint stiffness and we noticed Grace was much more mobile after being on it.

I agree with Sparky your bunnies are so lucky to have you as you really look after them and everything you do for them is done to perfection Hugs Hugs
