Spazzing mini lop after first pellet meal

Post by Tophdade on Thu May 29, 2014 11:20 pm

Hi all, my girlfriend and I just adopted a six week old mini lop. After 3 days, we've given her her first pellet meal in her spacious new home and we're working on litter training her. However, we're finding that it's very difficult to get her to go to the bathroom anywhere besides under wear she grazes on hay. We put her box under the feeder, and that's working for now, though I'm concerned about her eating her own poop if she can't learn to go elsewhere. Secondly, she's been extremely spastic and energetic since her first pellet meal. We're new to this, are these things a health risk or is she just adjusting? Thanks!

Hi and welcome to HH Wave

Don't worry about her eating her hay while she's on the "toilet", bunnies love to poo and eat hay at the same time. In fact, you're lucky she's doing so well with the litter training at such a young age! What a well mannered little lady! Laughing

What do you mean by "spastic"?

She's sort of flying around her cage and being more active than we've seen her. Nothing dangerous, and she has plenty of room to run around. Just wondering what the sudden change was

'spastic'  Shocked  ( binkying is a far nicer term )

Your mini lop sounds quite normal, the running around sounds like she is just very very happy and shes letting you know.

It's quite normal for a bunny like Thumper said to sit on their litter pooping from one end and eating hay the other end they love doing that, they will eat their soft
poops but that is quite normal.

I don't think you have any worries I think you have a young happy healthy little bunny  Very Happy

Welcome!
This bunny sound happy and content.
I always put some of their favourite hay into the litter tray for a nibble whilst performing duty!
What's your bunnies name? Any pictures?

Sounds like she was doing Binkies - always a sign of a happy bunny :-).

Bunnies like to eat while they poo so always make sure she has plenty of fresh hay and she will be just fine. It's brilliant she is doing it on one place :-)

Yep I agree with the others.

It is a hard life being a rabbit, sometimes you get so excited by something that you can't enjoy it properly for an attack of the binkies. When buns first come into a new environment they are generally quite withdrawn and quiet but as they gain confidence the binkies begin to come out.

As for the other issue, the litter tray is always best left under the hay rack. Buns like to eat, sleep and generally veg in their litter trays. There is nothing bad about this. As buns are herbivores there is nothing in their poo that would cause any issues if ingested by them or anyone else.

If she is having a good old bink, make sure she has plenty of space:-)

I agree with everyone else, I never used to put hay in Dougals tray until I read a lot on here about it and he loves having hay in it, He spreads it about too and poops on little bits of it but he does not eat the poopy bits. They are very intelligent and know the difference.

Your bunny sounds like she was doing a binky, this is a very happy bunny and she will do this a lot when happy. It is a compliment to you and young buns can get excited. I would read up on the forum on how to care for them, behavior signs etc, you will learn a lot and fast. I did. I advise anyone getting a pet they are new to , to read up as much as possible to be able to care from them correctly and keep your bunny happy and healthy.

Welcome to HH.

Hello and welcome to HH Wave

It sounds as though you have one very happy and content little lady. When bunnies are happy this is how they will show it - it is almost like a crazy 'turn' - they're just so overcome with happiness they have to let it out somehow Laughing

As others have said - her litter tray is best left under her hay rack. It doesn't matter if she poops where she is eating, she can ingest her poops as they are quite harmless and actually her soft ones which you might not see - because she is probably munching! - are beneficial to her. Try filling her litter tray with hay as well as putting it in the hay rack, my pair eat a lot more this way Thumbs Up
