I'm puzzled, what causes discolouration of urine?

Post by c.bolduan on Wed Jul 02, 2014 8:53 pm

Hi folks,
I hope it is nothing to serious as both bunnies, Bertie and Bubbles seem fine, eating, pooing, grooming and interacting.
I had them out in the garden today and left their carrier with some cotton towels in the run as they like to digg them about and build cosy beds, in the mesh tunnel.
When I collected them to bring them inside I realised that they owes had multiple urine Staines on them, all bright orange! scratch Embarassed No
Have they turned to fans of the Dutch team at the football?
Trying to establish what I fed over the last few days and can't think of anything unusual.
Hay, pellets as you do. I have given them some green oat hay which they enjoy?!?
Veggies: little bit of carrot ,broccolie, babysweetcorn, kale, spring green, red peppers
Fruit: apple, pineapple and as super treat a cherry each with stone removed obviously.
Anyone with any ideas of what is causing this?
I can't tell whether it is only from one or from both bunnies.
All suggestions are welcome Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Wave

Kale makes Molly and/or Junior pee orangey-brown Smile

But there are a few things on your list that could be the culprit. I wouldn't worry Very Happy

I remember the first time our rabbit Lady peed bright orange milky urine. I thought she must be dying.  The vet reassured me it was normal and urine color changes were almost always due to something they had eaten.  Spinach was the cause in that particular time.

Here is an informative article from the House Rabbit Society.   Article

I think just about anything can make it go funny colours.... Apples, carrots, kale.....

I think the only time to worry is if it seems sludgey and full of calcium or if there is blood in it.

No,no no debris or white stuff. Just bright orange it actually looks quite attractive if it would be not only patches here in there.
Up into the washing machine on hot cycle or into rubbish bin!

The towels not the bunnies Shocked No Love
