Cloudy eye Empty Cloudy eye

Post by iiisecondcreep Sun Nov 09, 2014 10:23 am

Was just down petting the buns when I noticed one of MJ's eyes looked not quite right, at first I thought it was just the reflection from the wall but his eye definitely looks cloudy.

Guess we'll be going to the vet tomorrow Sad

Hopefully, the clouding appears to be actually inside his eye not on the surface. I have only noticed it today, but I do spend quite a lot of time on the floor with both of them so I am sure I'd have noticed it earlier if it was there because it is really obvious Sad

Vibes for MJ and hope it is something simple! Please. Let us know what the vet thinks. Don't think you would appreciate a nose rub or a crunchie but certainly sending an anti worry hug to you. Hugs

Well I didn't even have time to say hello to the buns before I trapped them in the carrier and raced to the vets thanks to the traffic. As soon as I took him out the carrier I could see his eye was much worse than when I'd first noticed.

So the vet had a look and he has a complete cataract, she can't see his retina at all. And it also appears he has the start of one in his other eye. I said I didn't think cataracts happened that quickly but she said only old age cataracts come on slowly, otherwise its very very quick.

She said she's never encountered a rabbit with cataracts before so she is going to call the vet school tomorrow so I should hear back tomorrow afternoon.

I'm trying to keep my hopes up but I am absolutely gutted for him Sad

In slightly better news Temperance has put on 100g since I upped her pellets.

Aww poor MJ. That's what Thumper had. I didn't mention it because I wanted to be wrong! Thumper's was cloudy and had a blue-like tinge to it.

I totally understand you being gutted for him, but try and keep in mind just how well bunnies adapt Hugs

I did wander if it was a cataract. I wouldn't worry too much as buns can do well with limited vision as long as they know the room layout. And temperance will help him out too.

What is it about bunny eyes lately, so many with poorly eyes. Holly's has fully repaired I am glad to say and the vet did say that she may well have had hay tripped under her eyelid. Hope he gets better soon hun.
I am very pleased to here about Temperance too.

The vet called back today (I had called them on friday and they'd spoken to the vet school but there is a charge for advice so they had to check that was ok with me first), I missed the call but they left a message. The vet school have said there a few things that can cause cataracts, the main ones being EC and diabetes. The former is unlikely as he has no other symptoms and the latter is very rare indeed in rabbits. They have suggested we could treat for EC, or we could look at getting a referral to the vet school if we were wanting to think about surgery.

I'll call them back tomorrow for a chat, not sure about treating for EC - I understand this involves administering wormer every day for a month. MJ will not be medicated willingly and puts up a real fight, and it wouldn't cure the cataract. But I'll see what the vet reckons.

As far as surgery goes, if his other eye goes then we'd likely go down that route but at the moment it really doesn't seem to be affecting him so I think it would be a lot of unnecessary stress and pain.

I'm sorry to hear they suspect E.C. Try to find my notes from the conference as they suggested a shorte course, 9 days of top of my head, may be enough?
I can't imagine how a blind bunny would cope, but then they are adaptable and ready to surprise us at anytime.
Sending vibes for him and hugs for you as you are likely to be worried.

Liquid panacur is quite palatable and is easily taken on a mini shredded wheat. I think that quality of life is the big indicator with cataracts. If you only noticed the problem because the light caught him in a way that you could see it then it is obviously not impacting on his activity too much.
