Insurance Empty Insurance

Post by marleyNfriends Thu 26 Feb 2015 - 11:18

For those of you who have your buns insured, who do you use? And if you dont mind me asking, what level of cover, and what is your premium?

When I first got them insured several years ago, it was on impulse, as my parents were possibly going to be made redundant and I didnt want to rely on them for big vet bills. I went with Pets at Home. In that time, Ive claimed twice, for 2 different buns. The first time went without a hitch, but was a waste of time, as I didnt get a proper break down of the bill, and in the end, only got £30 back from a £300 bill, as Davie was the expensive bun, and hadnt yet been insured. Dollys should also be ok, now that I filled in the gaps as to why she had no vet history for a year.

Anyway, I need to insure Effie. I wasnt going to go with Pets at Home again, but Im now wondering if I should stay with them.

Its just under £7 a month per bun, for lifetime, premium cover. They are covered for £1500 in vets fees, per year. I havent read anywhere that there is a limit for each individual condition. My premiums have also never gone up.

Pet plan are £10.50 a month, and pay £2000 a year.

Exotic Direct are a whopping £14.16 for up to £2000 a year in vets fees. Thats more than I pay for my dog!!

Is the extra £500 cover worth it for £3-4 more? Surely £1500 is enough. I rarely claim unless its over £150, anyway. Its just a safety net for me. Im a bit worried about premiums at the moment, as goodness knows what Rockys will be next year.

I'm really happy with P@H and have 10 bunnies insured with them. I have no hesitation in recommending them. Pet Plan are becoming ridiculously expensive - Erin is now £185 a year, with £100 excess + 20% of the bill. All my bunnies with Pet Plan are now over 5 so have no other option. Dinky who is the same age with P@H is £90 a year, £75 excess plus 10% of the bill.

I've had loads of claims with P@H and only one has been messed up a little, they are great to deal with and I've had much better service off them overall than Pet Plan. I had a horrendous time with Pet Plan recently when they took 10 weeks to pay back an excess they should never have taken in the first play (£100), it took many phone calls and they were useless.

Over the years I've had six buns insured and working it out I've paid out approx. £4,500 and when an insurance pay out would have been a real help, last year with Loll running up bills totalling over £900 (less than I had paid in premiums), I couldn't claim a penny. Pet Plan claimed everything was related to his dental problems.
Now I have Henry and no insurance company will get a penny from me.
Sorry. I know for many insurance can be a lifeline and work out fine, but Henry's first trip to the vet when I registered him on the day I got him, found dental spurs and that, plus his age (3), limits insurance cover. So I put £6,000 aside to pay for unexpected vet bills and that won't be touched for his regular bills; it's EMERGENCY ONLY cash. I just wish I had done the same thing with my other rabbits, I'd be better off.

Unfortunately though, I dont have several thousand to put away for emergency vet bills. Dolly would have taken up the £1500 ive managed to save for my car insurance. Without insurance, Id have had to have Dolly pts, and Rocky would still be running around with wobbly back legs. Dolly had dental problems, but theres no way that pets at home can say that her kidney and liver failure was because of a dental issue, especially as her teeth were the first thing that were looked at, and made no difference.

Paddy is with Petplan, we have claimed for 2 out of the 4 years he has been with us. I have never had any issues with them, yes they are expensive and now have us over a barrel because of his age and existing conditions. We have pretty much broken even as far as claims vs premiums go.

None of the bunnies are insured - they are too old now. I have had some big hits with vets bills but as they have mainly been dental related it is a toss up whether the insurance would have paid anyway.

I am not sure the extra cover with Petplan is worth it in your case. Having said that, as I despise PAH there is no way I would use them Embarassed

Arabella is with pet plan like Dougal was. I cannot remember off top of my head the premium, is is just over £10 a month for her and excess is £50.

Im not a huge fan of Pets at Home, its part of the reason I was hoping to insure Effie with someone else. I think their ethics are terrible, but it comes down to what I can comfortably afford, unfortunately. With Marley being 6, I cant change him to another one now, either.

My pair are with pets at home, I have never claimed. I used to be with petplan but the premiums got silly. I pay for both buns what petplan wanted for Bruce alone when he was 5. And the actual amount you can claim is about even between both companies when you take excess and %excesses into account. And pets at home is not the actual insurer.

Yes you are right Cheryl, I didn't think PAH would be the actual insurer but I assumed there is some monetary gain for them to put their name to it.

I would never castigate anyone for using PAH insurance or buying from there, it is just my personal choice. Sorry - will shut up now about PAH.

When it comes down to figures Sophia I do think PAH is your best bet.

From what have heard lve they all could do with improving but our vets says that Pet Plan is the best because they pay up quickly and do not quibble as much as some other insurers. We have Holly insured because we could never afford a big pay out for operations or something similar if she became poorly.

The two cats and Bertie and Bubble are with pet plan.
Can't tell the monthly rate on top of my head but know for the Bertie the excess was £55.00.
They won't pay for denials but Bubbles had a few treatments for slow guts, because she eats all the things she shouldn't.
Bertie's bill at present stands at whopping £1580.00 and this would obviously show as an increase ment at the next renewal date.
I had asked to insure Vernon with them the qoute for him was£132.00 per month. Frankly it was their way of saying we don't want to insure this animal. I will have to find insurance for D. Layla and will watch this post with great interest.

Honestly, I think im going back with pets at home once I find out what's happening with my claim for Dolly. They were good when there was an issue, and sorted it quickly. We will see what happens. I'm 99% sure I'll be going with them again for Effie.

After forking out just over £1k in the space of 2 weeks for Temperance last year I got MJ insured earlier this year with PetPlan. Admittedly I didn't do much shopping around and unfortunately as MJ is now 4 I will be stuck with them. Current premium is £10.50 per month, which covers up to £2k and I think excess is £100.

The only thing mines excludes is gastrointestinal because he once went off his food for a few hrs and we took him to the vet Rolling Eyes
Also his cataracts because it developed within the first 2 weeks of the policy. So dental problems should be covered.

Dental issues aren't covered if they're pre-existing. ie, had them either before or within 2 weeks of policy start date. I think they can be quite clever with dental claims. I've never bit here claiming for dentals. I do believe they cover it if it's due to an accident or injury though.

its seems dental could be a grey area. I don't know if I should insure or save? Hmmm maybe both! Do buns need to have had a dental check before they can be insured do you know??

From memory my policy states they must have a dental check up once a year and must have had one within a year prior to taking out the policy

I tried with Bertie dental last year.
He had no troubles before, regular seen by the vet. Pet plan refused.
Plus one needs to consider that depending on the costs of dental and you excess the result on each claim is that your premium will go up.

Well they have said that my payment will go out within 5 working days. I lost Dolly on the 11th, so not too bad going, really.

Im probably just going to use P@H for Effie, then. As someone said, its not actually P@H, its a company called BDML

They won't payout for routine work - so no burring of spurs or incisors. I don't know where most of them stand on roots problems.

We are with Petplan and they have been fantastic. Whats good about them is that its life cover and so you know that you will never be without cover. I pay £14 for daisy and £13 each for C&A but what is good is that over the last three years I have used up to the limit for both C&A (so £4000 each year) and the premium has only gone up by a £1 a year... Cant ask for more than that. Ive never had a single issue with paying out either, always quick payments (thank goodness). Although its a little more, I think its worth it.

Katie, have they helped you with dental treatment? Also, if you don't mind me being nosy, what's their excess?

Looking at it for Mo now he's leaning towards needing regular dental work... Sad
