In need of Rabbit Room ideas...

Post by FluffSlave on Sun Jan 11, 2015 3:38 pm

Hello all Very Happy

As you know the buns have got the room back 100% to themselves now. As it seems to be working out with the chinchillas being in my room, I think I am going to 'do up' the space a bit.

So...

1) What colour paint(s) do you think is best? Ideally darker shades but something not too dark that it closes the room up. This is just because when Willow has territorial outbursts, cream walls bear the brunt of it quite badly Embarassed

2) What things can I put in there? They have a big run which has their hay but that is manky and chewed now so I want to chuck it out if possible. How else can I give them an 'area' where they can eat, snooze etc. Mr Mo does appreciate this. They have all of the usual tunnels, balls, cardboard boxes etc but any other ideas of what could go in there?

I did want to get them some stuff from Manor Pet Housing but don't think I can justify it. Although fab, they're SO expensive! Sad

Oh how fab.

Do you know anyone that is handy at all with wood. We have found that since we put in the elevated closed in box with ramps going up to it, C&A have been so much happier.... they love the ramps and I think they feel like they have a proper warren. It cost about £30 in wood, but you would need to know someone who can work a saw (I can't) lol.

Some non slip rugs would be great (but I think you have already thought of this.

Hey. One of Mums old work colleagues is fantastic at carpentry. He has his own Facebook page, and is currently building me some of the castles. They look exactly the same as the ones by Manor Pet Housing, but are half the price. I could always drop him a message, and find out the name of his Facebook page. Then you could see if he is willing to post items out.

Also, if you can paint the room any colour you like, how about a pale burnt orange? Id love an orange and green carrot themed room if I had a bunny toom! Laughing  Orange shades seem to be a colour that's in fashion at the moment. I occasionally got spray on my walls when I had bunnies living inside, but it was really easy to wipe off. The names of paints seem to have changed since I painted my old room though, so you might have to ask what paints can be wiped with a damp cloth before you buy them.

As for a little area. My bunnies sort of made their own! I would provide a hide, with a snuggly blanket, litter tray and water bowl in a certain area of the room and let the bunnies decide where they want their little safe zone to be. I know when I had mine indoors, I had them in a pen, but they also had a little area for when they were free ranging, and they would retreat to there or their cage if they were bored or frightened or ready to chill....although sometimes they would fall asleep in the middle of the floor Laughing

My first bit of advice is to invest in decent quality wipeable paint. Willow will spray and it will need cleaning whatever the colour of the walls. I would go for white or cream as you want a colour that maximises the light levels in the winter in order to have happy buns.

This has reminded me of Twiggs Way's talk on housing at the rwaf conference. She advocated getting down to rabbit level and consider whether what you see would be exciting for a rabbit. She also talked about the importance of peepholes for rabbits. So lots of hidey holes whether boxes to hide in or things to hide behind. Lots of levels are also great. My pair love having the dining table and chairs in their room and love sleeping on it or under it. And hidey holes stuffed with hay are the best sort you can provide.

Sophia that would be awesome. If you could do that for me I'd be chuffed - would love for mine to have a castle! I'm also loving the idea of an orange and green carrot-themed room Very Happy

I am definitely going for washable paint!!

It's Oakdene Woodcraft his logo is acorns. I've shared his photo of the bunny castle/bridge on Facebook, and tagged you, so you should be able to find it. Xx
