Litter training rescue bun Empty Litter training rescue bun

Post by Sandie83 Mon Mar 16, 2015 11:15 pm

Hi,

I've had my male bun Humphrey since he was 3 months old and he uses his litter tray well. A month ago I got him a lady friend, Heidi. Heidi had lived with her male partner in what can be best described as a large hamster cage. Her partner was pts as he was so matted from being unable to clean himself that his private parts had started to rot. They were both overweight as had no room to exercise. Heidi recovered well after treatment, and after an initial bout of over grooming, is now doing well and loving the space she has. However she still won't use a litter tray. I pick up her poops and put them in the tray, but it's not working. Any advice?

Is she peeing in the tray? That's the most important thing. If she isn't peeing in the tray then put some dry litter where she usually pees and once she has "gone" on it collect it up, put it in the litter tray and put the tray on the spot where she pees. She will smell the pee on the litter in the tray and "go" there. You can gradually move the tray into the place you want it.
If she is a keen hay eater putting hay in one end of the litter tray, or in a net of hay over the tray, will encourage her to poop in the tray while she eats.
Does she have her own tray or share with Humphrey? If she's sharing maybe try giving her her own tray.

She definitely isn't peeing in the tray all the time. And the pee patches are in different places; she doesn't seem to have a favourite place. They were sharing but I've just bought a new litter tray for her in the hope of attracting her to that instead. Will try your advice, thanks :-)

Perhaps if you confine her to a small area. Have you got a pen ? Or could you cordon off a area of say six or eight square feet and keep her there until she is using the tray satisfactorily then open the pen (don't remove it) and leave the tray in the pen. She will go back to use the tray and after a couple of "clean" days remove the pen.

When I'm not at home (they have free range when I am), they're confined to my utility which is about 10 by 6 ft so it's not fair to split in two. I'll see how the new litter tray goes, but cordoning is an option for her holiday home, thank you.

You would only be cordoning off for a few days, just until she is using the tray regularly. Not cruel really has once clean the bun could have greater freedom.

I know. I simply don't understand why people have pets if they aren't going to look after them. No-one is forced to have pets. Seeing her grow in confidence and learn to explore has been so lovely though.

The awful humans who did this to them need to be thrown in front of a bus, evil humans.

I am glad she has found you and hope litter training works soon. I am sure it will.

I wonder if these evil people have ever though it is tantamount to being forced to sit on an overflowing toilet and never being allowed to get off?

Heidi does now seem to be thoroughly enjoying life. She's mischievous, stubborn but most importantly no longer scared. As soon as I open the door to their room, she is the first one to run off and explore. However I am so sad for her former husbun who spent his whole life in misery :'(

Heart breaking,  I just can't imagine how anyone could be so cruel,  I have little faith in the human race some times, I wonder what they'll do to us when we're old:pale:
