Freaking Fleas!!!
Marley and Effie have rabbit fleas!! Not cat fleas, actual rabbit fleas. I caught one and put it under the microscope at work. Little blighters.
How im supposed to control this long term, and prevent myxi is beyond me!! There are wildies all over. Short of fly mesh on the aviary, and vaccinations up to date, im at a loss.
Going to treat with ivermectin again in 2 weeks, indorex the shed, and hoover it regularly. Poor Henry has been out of action, as hes been a bit choked up with sucking up all the plaster and rubble from the workmen! I refused to do it, because I always clean it out after Ive used it in the rabbit shed.
Im wondering if im going to have to start putting regular flea treatment on the buns? Its not something I like the idea of, but if it prevents insects biting htem and spreading myxi, what choice have i got?!
Also sent Effies poo off to be tested for cocci today. I hope it comes back as positive, and that baycox clears it, otherwise we really are probably looking at Megacolon.

Re: Freaking Fleas!!!
Jeez, I remember when the vet told me Loll had fleas .... I actually grimaced and stepped away from the table it made me feel so yukky.
Fleas, ticks and leaches ... I cannot abide them.
Funnily enough mites don't have the same affect on me. Henry's mite issue when I got him didn't really bother me ... but fleas? Ugh!
It's a regular spring thing, fleas.
Do you have cats that catch wildies? Cats can carry rabbit fleas though the flea won't live on them, they just hitch a ride. You may need to set up a regular treatment.
I'm gonna be watching that great grey lump of mine now.

Re: Freaking Fleas!!!
No cats. Dogs, yes, but theyre squeaky clean and have a good regime. Wild rabbits TONS. Im surrounded. I dont see them in the garden as much, as sadly, ive had to let Poppy dog chase them. She chases, never to kill, just thinks its fun, because they run. Shes not interested in chasing my buns, because they dont run from her You dont see the wildies as much now, but theyre still pooping on the lawn, so i know theyre there.
Going to have to get a fly screen up, and yes, possibly a regular treatment for them I hate the idea of using chemicals on them, but i need to control parasites, esp if theyre coming from the wild buns, before myxi starts to raise its head. My neighbour has said that his dog catches myxi buns on the back field all the time in summer. He has a pond to, so im not in a good position!

Sounds like you've done everything you can. I'd be getting mesh on their set up too. Can never be too careful

Oh this must be a worry for you. Given the wildies are entering your garden I don't think you have much choice and need to continue to treat the buns and their shed

Re: Freaking Fleas!!!
I had a problem with my bunnies repeatedly picking up fleas a few years ago, I was hesitant to routinely treat them with chemicals so started using Assisi grooming lotion as a natural deterrent. It's great, I still use it now
