I've been conducting an experiment!

Post by Thumper2001 on Fri Apr 10, 2015 11:36 pm

With Molly's recent teeth troubles, I'd been having a think about what's changed (I know, I'm probably clutching at straws, but anyway!) and it occurred to me that they eat less hay than they used to.

Why?

I don't know if some of you will remember but it summer last year I switched their feeds round from nuggies in the morning and veg at night to veg in the morning nuggies at night. I think hay consumption went down from here. I can't explain why, who can fathom out bunnies?! Laughing

So Ive switched them back the last three days and the results are in.

They eat FAR more hay this way round. I can't explain it but I'm certain.

So we are sticking with nuggies in the morning and veg at night!

I'll have to find other ways to tire them out in the evening. Not that the treat balls really did it anyway!

Do you find that they drink more water during the day if they have nuggies in the morning? As veg contains a decent amount of water I would imagine so. Maybe fluid intake has something to do with hay consumption?

Aw damn it. Water intake is something I've not paid attention to for a long time Hmmm They have a HUGE bowl and I just turn the tap on until I think it's enough!

You might be on to something tho!

That's the regime I use. Will definitely not change anything.

Glad you've realised how to improve hay uptake.

Henry is a hay eating machine.
I give him Burgess (1 egg cup) in the morning, veg midday (I'm gradually decreasing the veg and replacing with wild forage) and then Burgess (1 egg cup) at night. But he's eating hay all day and night.
I added up his hay consumption on the day that marked his forth month with me and it works out thus: in four months he's eaten 24lb Oat/Wheat/Barley hay, 4lb Timothy Hay, 3lb Orchard Grass Hay and the best part of a 45oz bag of meadow hay (his least favourite) plus he does have occasional cravings for readigrass.
He drinks almost a dish of water a day and drinks at any time of the day. And his poops are to die for!
