So we went to see my lovely bunny vet Yvette last night, and apart from the obvious problems with his coat and his weight she thinks he seems quite healthy Very Happy
She thinks its an injury in his eye, his previous owner had put him in a small hutch/run with a male continental giant HBWS No confused Mad

She and one of the lovely bunny nurses helped clip the mats off him in the harder to reach places,  so now I just need to keep grooming him which won't be a problem as he's a little sweetie and loves attention and being petted

I've got some drops for his eye to help it heal, and so now just need to feed him up, he's already put on 100g in the 2 days he's been with me so if that continues he'll be nearer a healthy weight when we go back in 2 months. Smile

At that point we'll decided if he's strong enough for surgery to be neutered, microchipped, and have a mini dental, as well as a fur and claw trim while he's Sleep

Becky is getting used to having him around, she's happy 90% of the time, but every now and then she's not sure, I've been really struggling to know what to do for the best, I know that some mounting and a little bit of chasing is normal, but poor little Jasper has had a hard enough time so I don't want to stress him out, but I also don't want to take him away every time Becky moves at him, re-enforcing for her that if she chases him I'm going to take him away, and that for him I'm always going to be there to rescue him.
But there has been lots of grooming between them, which have probably been helped by the car rides and encounters with the evil fur/hay/poo/litter/anything-thats-on-the-floor eating machine also known as the bunny scarer (the hoover). But everytime I see him I just want to scoop him up and cuddle him but I have to remind myself there's plenty of time for that once they are bonded (and also it'll feel better once he's not so boney)

Another bit of good news (which I was worried might have meant that I couldn't keep him) is that he hasn't got a microchip - so he's all mine Love

Isn't it wonderful when they are cuddly bunnies?  Holly loves love lots of attention and will snuggle up to me but doesn't like being picked up.  I am glad they are grooming each other love, that has to be a good thing and I hope everything sorts itself out for you and your lovely bunnies.  I am really pleased that she is yours too. Thumbs Up

I'm sorry to say Jo, that last night things turned very sour, there was a scuffle, lots of chasing, spraying and unsuccessful attempts at mounting from both of them, which ended up with hay, poo, litter, wee and fur everywhere, a sopping wet Jasper (who'd upset a water bowl over himself) a stressed out, hyperventilating Becky (who couldn't understand why when she was the boss this little boy was now trying to assert himself) and me in tears. Crying or Very sad

I managed to get hold of Becky who was calming down when I held her (not something I'm usually ever allowed to do) so took her back to the bunny house to sort her self out. While I got Jasper wrapped in a towel and took him into my room (its a small second bedroom that I use as a dressing room) and got the hair dryer out on him.

Jasper is now in the travel pen in my room, Becky has the bunny house to herself again and I think I shall leave it that way until Jasper has had his nads removed as I think this was the cause of all the problem. They had spent the day together getting along beautifully, then when I let them out into the living room for exercise time there was a chinning competition between them which then escalated Sad

I think it will be better for him to stay seperate for now, as he can then concentrate on getting himself fit and healthy, his eye can heal, there's no competition over the food and his coat can grow back. Once he's then had the snip and recovered I'll start dating them again and hopefully it will be a bit easier Smile

I'm sorry to hear they had a scuffle Sad

I think your idea is probably a good one. Let Jasper get his health up, get him neutured and then try again.

I do hope things go better for them on the second attempt Hugs

Oh sweetie, I am so sorry to hear this.  It is upsetting seeing bunnies fight and when they really go for it it is so vicious.  Poor little Jasper. I think you are doing the right thing, keep them separate until Jasper has his little alteration and try again gradually. Please keep us posted hun. Hugs

So I was at the vet last night again, sooner than planned - he's got Snuffles
So now the poor boy is not only on just the Ocufen and Remend for his damaged cornea, he's now got Ocufen for both eyes, Metacam, Bisolvon and Zithromax, as well as Aloe Vera gel for some of the remaining sores and dry skin patches.
But the good news is he's put on over 300g in 10 days and his poos have doubled in size, his fur is starting to grow back and he can groom himself some more. Very Happy

The poor little love is having such a bad time as are you mum.  I am glad he is gaining weight and his fur is growing back, that is what comes of having a loving mum like you.  Lots of healing and loving vibes are on their way. Hugs

Jasper was neutered, micro-chipped,and  had his teeth and coat sorted 10 days ago at the vets.

On Monday I took him back for his 1st post-op appointment, taking Becky along for the ride.
We had dropped daddy off at work for a meeting and had to go and wait for him, so I put the seats down in the back of my estate car and the bunnies had some bonding time. Hugs

Things were going so well that when I got home they went in the play pen together and through out the day I slowly introduced things for them, food, litter tray toys etc. Smile

They spent the next 2 nights in the bunny pen together then I opened the bunny-house door on Wednesday evening and they've been getting along great. Love

They're not quite sure who's in charge (Becky is mostly I think) so there is the occasional chase and attempt at mounting but a minute later its all over, but there isn't any of the aggressive growling, lunging and scratching that happened before. Thumbs Up

Jasper is doing really well, he's continuing to gain weight, his fur is growing back, snuffles is under control, and his eye is healing nicely. He loves having the bunny house to explore, and Becky is having a positive impact - I often find him copying her which is good as she loves her hay and bunny snuggles, but thankfully he is still a little mammas-boy who enjoys fuss and attention Very Happy

This is great news love and I am so glad that things have completely turned around for you and the bunnies.  It sounds as if they are going to be the best of friends.  Please give us updates.

This is fab news! Thumbs Up

I'm so glad Jasper and Becky have decided to be friends, and that Jasper is doing so well. It's amazing what a bit of love and patience can do for them Love

Funnily enough, my Mr Mo (formerly named Jasper) was in quite a similar state when I got him!

Love happy endings too. Read somewhere that a good bonding start is to travel with the bunnies in a car. Seems to have worked on the pair:love:LoveHappy DanceLoveLove
