Henry's nose UPDATE.

Post by woodwench on Sat Nov 28, 2015 1:29 pm

Late on yesterday evening I thought Henry wasn't quite himself again, quieter than normal and not following his usual routine.
This morning he is sneezing out runny white stuff and wiping his nose a lot.
I've phoned the vet for advice and he said that antibiotic he is one is right for the infection, which is a bacterial infection and not something that is going to keep recurring.
I was reluctant to take him into the surgery and because the vet knew the problem and felt he was on the right meds he said he felt it best not to stress him, to keep an eye on him and see how he was on Monday (of course he said not to hesitate to get him in if he got worse).
Now... as anyone had experience of this kind of thing?
Bacterial infection up one nostril that showed no external discharge, just an occasional sneeze, no wet nose/paws. Using Septrim antibiotic which is recommended for this.
Could it be that the infection gunge is now thinning  and clearing from his nose?

He Woodwench, if it is snuffles or an bacterial infection it might make sense to send a swab to path lab.
I would recommend to consider nebulising with f10. I got plenty here and could send you some.

We sent a swab to be tested at lab. The answer came yesterday morning... Bacterial infection.
He's been doing really well since shaking off the GA on Sunday evening. He's eating okay today and at the moment is lying half on his side, quite relaxed but about every twenty minutes or so he huffs. He is in a bit of a grump with me as well, sick of me checking him out.
I've had the nebuliser running (with F10) earlier this afternoon for about twenty minutes. He hates the noise.
No sure about abscess, wouldn't that keep the gunk contained?
His breathing is quiet, and he's flat out sleeping now.
I was late getting the antibiotics down him today because he refused to take them in the bite size shredded wheats and I finally got them down him on toast. He hates the smell of Septrim.
Thanks for the offer Claudia, just opened a new bottle today.

Not this time round. Last X-ray was New Years Eve '14.
He had tiny spurs done this time and tear ducts flushed but ducts were fine.

Are you giving him metacam? Not only as pain relief but more as an anti inflammatory.

The bacteria found was PFEUDOMONAD.
just cahtted with his vet and he wants to see how he goes over the weekend then if he's no better see him on Mon. and maybe change his antibiotic.
He's on Loxicom ... same diff as Metacam.

Just had a look at sites concerning this bug... Pfeudomonad ... not very reassuring.

Thanks for the support, everyone.
He seems quite bright now after an afternoon spent looking very depressed and giving the odd snuffly snort. He's eating okay in fact he's just had a session in his hay box.
I just hate this uncertainty and wish I could hear how others have coped, what drugs they used etc.
He's my boy, and I'm worried.

He's not too good this afternoon. I shall nebulise him in a minute or two. He has not been nebulised in his travel box before and I'm worried how stressed he will be as he hates the noise of it.
I've talked, via email, with Ros Lamb of the RWAF about this bacteria and what it does. She had a bun with it in its nose and it took a year to beat it.
I'm very worried how I shall cope with Henry if I have my own winter troubles. The future looks very grim.

Have you read the medirabbit page Dee?http://www.medirabbit.com/EN/Respiratory/Bacterial/URI.htm

They give specific antibiotics for different types of infection.

Post by woodwench on Sun Nov 29, 2015 8:34 pm

Thanks.
I had a go at nebulising him for real earlier. I've just had the thing running in the room before and he hated it. But I got him in his travel box this evening and had a go, just ten minutes so as not to stress him. He was fine, less bothered by the nebuliser noise than he's out of his box... though not impressed with me.
I'm so new to this nebulising game. I've never had to do it before and I'm not even sure about what are probably obvious things.... like, why does F10 have to tops to the bottle, and how do you get the formula out in the correct measurement? I pierced a hole in the cardboard cap and drew off 1.5 to mix with distilled water.... Not the best idea and probably about as daft as you can get. I'm just not good at this kind of thing, I'm more into behavioural and psychological things that practical nursing.

Thanks to Ros at the RWAF I am now nebulising Henry.
It really is quite easy once you put the panic back in the drawer.
I just need to keep him eating, he seems to need reminding about food (very unHenry) and he sleeps a lot but there have been some alert times, even a dash around with a binky.
I don't know what to make of him, depressed/sleepy and not into his dinner, then once or twice a day he wakes up and shows some interest, even doing the binky.
This is not good for my stress levels!
