MJ going to the vet school Empty MJ going to the vet school

Post by iiisecondcreep Wed Jan 27, 2016 7:35 pm

So MJ is currently 1.8kg, he was 2.2kg, when he lost his eyesight he went down to about 2kg, when we lost T he went to 1.9kg. He's now been 1.8kg for the last couple of months.

His appetite although better than when he was blind and when we lost T is no where near what it was before he lost his eye sight. He does have some nommy days, but he is not putting on weight. Although over the last week he has been more active, though again no where near compared to before he lost his eyesight. I've also noticed that the inside of his front paws has been wet as the fur there is hard, though there is no obvious drooling or discharge. Since noticing that I decided I wanted to get him a scan at the vet school.

At his last eye vet visit I'd asked for an exotics vet to be there as well but there wasn't, so I decided to see my own vet and get him referred. So we had him at the vet tonight, he had a bit of a check up teeth seem ok but he could see something inside his ear canal that is probably pus. So they're going to get me a referral to the vet school tomo, and he'll get another eye check up at the same time. At his last check up his eye pressure had increased so they need to see how the Azopt (pressure reducing eye drops) are working and if he needs additional meds. I suppose something in his ear could be affecting his eye pressure, when he's being held to get the pressures taken the vet holding always has to hold him further back than usual as being held closer to the head can affect eye pressure.

In other news, Philip has put on 150g and is now 1.3kg.

As Thumper says, he has maintained weight which is hopeful. An ear infection do you think? Would he get wet paws from that?
Fingers crossed for MJ tomorrow. He's had a rough time of it of late.... he deserves a break (so do you). Hugs Hugs

The vet school phoned today to arrange the appointment, but were struggling to arrange the eye specialist and exotics vet at the same time. However I said to them it might be worth speaking to the eye specialist as she hadn't originally planned to see MJ for another month or so but I wanted to see an exotics vet and thought combine the two... and also if he has something in his ears that could be affecting his eye pressures so maybe worth getting that checked first. So waiting for them to call back again, app probs going to be next week.

Good luck Hun, I hope they can sort the problem. Makes perfect sense that anything in his ears might also affect his eyes. If only they could tell us how they are feeling.

Thinking of you both xx

so the vet had a look in his ears and has said its just wax, also noted that he has extremely narrow ear canals and would benefit from regular cleaning.
She had a feel of him and a listen and her main concern was that she struggled to find his kidneys so they may be very small. This could be as a result of him having EC.

So he's been admitted for bloods, urine test and possible a CT scan.

Philip is also getting an MOT while they're in.

They're having a sleepover at the vet school.

The vet called to say that the blood tests were partially back and were showing changes to his kidneys, but they're still waiting on full results back. He was in for his CT scan while she was on the phone.

Philips exam went ok, he also has narrow ear canals and she's suggested both of them having their ears cleaned fortnightly to prevent wax build up. They also both have minor spurs but nothing that they'd want to put them under GA for atm.

She also found a small soft tissue lump in Philips abdomen, it could be a lymph node, a bit of colon or something else. But its not possible to tell just by feeling about. She's going to get one of the other exotics vets to have a feel as well, but potentially Philip will be getting a scan as well. It could possibly have something to do with Philip having a sensitive tummy. A scan would also show any other problems with joints and such like - I was telling her that on slidey floors his feet often slide out from under him.

They still hadn't managed to get a urine sample from MJ when I heard from them today late afternoon though his bladder felt full so they were sure it would be imminent. So another sleepover at the vets tonight.

Whatever the vet felt in Philips abdomen yesterday was gone today so she thought probably a bit of bowel. However she has said they she'd like us to get a sample of his caecotrophs and bring him back in about a fortnight.

So I'll be picking them up after work tomorrow, and I'll get MJ's results then I guess.

Its awfully quiet in here without bunnies pottering about!

Bunnies are home! Philip is pleased to be home, MJ is sulking after having been abandoned at the vets for days.

MJ's discharge note starts with:
"MJ was admitted for investigation of ongoing weightloss despite an adequate appetite.
As always, MJ is the perfect patient and has been very good for us"

He's a good boy Smile

So the discharge note says:
The blood sample showed no significant abnormalities noted on biochemistry an haematology.
The urine sample showed a slight increase in protein levels but was otherwise normal.
A conscious CT scan showed no evidence of significant dental disease, a build up of material in the outer ear canal.
The main abonormal findings from the CT scan were related to the kidneys. MJ's left kidney was normal, however his right kidney was markedly shrunken and mineralised. It is possible that this is an old change eg secondary to congenital malformation or a chronic infection or a newer problem over the past few months which could be a result of infection.
We performed an ultrasound scan on both kidneys which showed the right to be with limited blood supply and therefore likely not working at all. The left kidney however looked normal and healthy and will be able to compensate efficiently for the problematic right kidney.

Our next step is to make sure the right kidney is not acting as a source of infection, so we would recommend admitting MJ next week and give fluid therapy to. We would then wait until his bladder is full before performing cystocentesis (whereby a urine sample is obtained with a needle directly from the bladder) under ultrasound guidance. This would allow us to send for bacterial culture and sensitivity to check for any signs of infection.

I've also to collect 3-4 poos from them each day for the next few days so they can check for any worms or protozoa that might be linked with his weight loss.

So... over all I think this seems positive. I was really worried when we took him in they'd find cancer or something (esp after what happened with T and because his was so bad for so long with the EC). He still seems quite sad, and not the bunny he used to be. But at least all this will hopefully rule out any health problems. And maybe if we can get some weight back on him after all this he'll have a bit more energy and feel happier.

ETA the vet said Philip was a real character and was keeping them amused (no idea what he was doing!) and apparently last night when they got put back together Philip would not stop humping MJ so the vets had to sit with them so MJ could get some peace (apparently poor MJ was just sitting there letting him get on with it) Shocked
