MJ and Philip update

Post by iiisecondcreep on Mon May 09, 2016 10:24 pm

Had a vet visit today for nail trims, weigh in, and Philip bum shave.

So Philip has had any rogue bits of poo shaved off and I told her just to shave (clip) the whole area as much as possible, as his fur is like wool it was quite tricky but hopefully got enough off to help him keep clean.

Philip is up to 1.26kg which is good, unfortunately MJ is down to 1.64kg- down from 1.8kg last time he was weighed and around 2.1kg from when he was 'healthy'.

Obviously, this is a worry. His appetite is still not great although that is now normal for MJ and there is no other noticable change in his behaviour. We try to always have a variety of things to try him with, but its hit or miss and sometimes he'll take something one minute and turn his nose up the next. The leaves are starting to come in so I've been collecting some leaves for him over the last few days and he's eating a bit more of them. WHen I've been letting them out for a run before work MJ has been having a proper zoomy binky session which is good.

The D1ck vet have been in touch because the London vet was in touch about getting more recent eye pressure results, as his pressures aren't really going down again one of his eye drops is being changed (he gets azopt 3 times a day and maxidex once, the maxidex is being changed to this new one). He's to go to the vet school again at the start of next month to get his eye pressures checked again and to get bloods done again.

The D1ck vet also said when they called that they have another bunny that has come in with cataracts and were asking me about our experience taking MJ to London. I said I'd definitely recommend it.

Here are some recent pics of them:

Hope things sort themselves out and the new meds will help. I've only once put cream in a buns eyes and that was for ulcers when I first rescued Mr Starbuck. He was a doddle to medicate, such a laid back and loving buck which was surprising considering his horrendous early life. How do you get on?
I shall have to get the vet to come out and do Henry's nails so. Just have to pick one of my boys good days, I don't want him stressed on day when he's already feeling low.

He's very easy to give eye drops to, thankfully! The main problem usually is Philip getting in the way Rolling Eyes
Oral meds are a completely different story :|

hopefully Henry is feeling well enough soon for his nail trim

Bubbles s a nightmare to medicate. I use mini wheat bites or fenugreek crunchies. Thankfully she is on metacam too and that overrides the not so pleasant taste of other meds.
Glad you found a vet able to treat this and hope he will do a steady recovery. Thumbs Up Love

Sounds like you are in good hands, although bunny worry is a constant unrelenting pressure isnt it so Im sending you a big great hug.

Glad to hear Pip is doing so well. Do they have any idea why he gets these botty problems? Charlie was the same, but I had always put it down to the amount of meds he was on, and id find that a little shot of fibreplex would help things settle if he had a bad poo day.

Thanks guys Smile

Katie they don't know whats causing his tummy problems, on the plus side since starting on the pro-c it doesn't seem to have been anywhere near as bad. The D1ck vet have said to bring them a sample if we can and they'll test it but they need to get it quite quickly and due to work unless he produces one on a fri night/sat morning its just not possible :/
If he has anymore I will try the fibreplex Smile

Further update:
The london vet (Rick Sanchez @ RCVS) called last night to see how MJ was doing. So i told him about the weight loss and he suggesting moving the appointment for start of next month forward, so thats now on friday. He also talked to me about the new eye drops. And he said the D1ck vet are sending another bun to him for cataract surgery Smile

So we had our appointment on Friday, the vet thinks Philips mucky bum issue may be a behavioral thing as there is no reason he can't keep himself clean, so it could be something he's eating thats making him not want to eat his caecals.

MJ's eye pressure in his right eye is higher still so still on all the eye drops for now.

They took a blood sample, was hoping for the result today but didn't get a call.

MJ weighed at 1.62 so .02 down from Monday but that could be nothing.

Unfortunately today MJ is refusing food. I gave him 10mls of critical care made up this morning and another 10mls when i got in. I called the vet this morning and they've given me painkiller and tummy drugs (meloxydil/metacam, ranitidine and cisapride).

He's still refusing food. I managed to give him maybe 2ml more of critical care but he was struggling so badly I had to let him go. I've separated them so I can tell if MJ is eating.

He doesn't appear to have eaten or drank at all overnight, the only visible poos are about 4 tiny and very wet ones.

My vet opens at 8.30, I'll call in then.

Re: MJ and Philip update

Post by iiisecondcreep on Tue May 17, 2016 12:17 pm

My oh took them to the vet for opening at 8.30, he told them MJ had not eaten for 24hrs and they were separated last night so we could say for certain that he had not eaten, drank or passed any poos during the night. They did not want to admit him as an emergency and said it would be a normal appointment which the earliest was 11. My OH insisted and they took him in.

I spoke to the vet school when they opened at 9am, his blood test results were pretty much normal. I mentioned to them about him not eating and they confirmed, yes this is an emergency and even a bun who had not been eating for far less time they'd admit and immediately treat with fluids and a strong painkiller.

I called our vet back at 9.30, he'd still not been looked at. I told the girl I'd spoken to the vet school and what they'd said, she said she'd 'pass that on'.

My oh got a call just after 10.30 from them asking what meds he'd had (I'd wrote everything down for him to give them...)
I spoke to them again at 11.15 and they said he was in an incubator, on fluids and had an antibiotic. He still hadn't done any poos and not eating by himself (being syringe fed).

Really not happy that he didn't get seen until 10.30.

How is he?
I'd be looking for another vet. That's shocking, not good practice to leave a bun under those circumstances for so long. He was an emergency case.

We picked him up last night, with baytril to give him in addition to the other drugs we already have. He is eating by himself, thankfully, though I'll continue with the drugs until they run out. The vet suggested continueing syringe feeding him, but this is massively stressful for him and he struggles like crazy. I think he finds the oral meds stressful enough and I don't want to make things worse so I've opted not to syringe feed unless I have to.

See if he'll eat the critical care himself, you could mix them in baby food see if he'll take it
Hope he feels better soon, it's horrible when they aren't well.

Just wanted to suggest what Gemma said.
Mix critical care with baby food mashed banana anything goes!
Regarding meds I use wheat bites with no added sugar and fill them with drugs. They absorb up to 3 mls that Bubblesbtakes without hesitation.
Sending oodles of vibes and wishes and hugs.

Yes, how's he doing?
If he is so stressed by syringing maybe offer dampened pellets.

Hi guys,

Good news, MJ seems pretty much back to normal.

Not so good news, now Philip isn't well. He was slightly off colour last night, this morning he wasn't very good. He ate a bit of parsley but thats it so he got a half syringe of made up rescue remedy (I made it watery on the basis that he might be dehydrated), and he has had really runny poos over night and he is stinking and between his back legs is covered. I suspect this is due to him eating more than his share of dried herbs we put down for MJ. I wiped between his legs as much as I could with a damp cloth but hes still dirty and stinky. I've put the insect repellent on his back end and I'll give him a bum bath tonight. I also made the executive decision to give him some of the painkiller prescribed to MJ.
MJ is bad to medicate/syringe feed. Philip is ten times worse.

Hopefully he'll be better tonight.
