Need Advice - Rabbit Corneal Ulcer not going away
Hi All,
I have a 6 year old blue mini lop, murphy and for the past two months he has had an eye ulcer.
I have taken him to the vets on so many occasions now and are due to take him again later today.
First I was prescribed something called Isathal (Fucithalmic) 10mg/g eye drops, this carried on for around a month as I was getting married. I think we got through around four tubes. On my return the ulcer seems pretty much the same. The vet seemed to think it was healing inside the eye but we decided to move onto some called Remend (modified hyaluronic acid (HA), which has been going on for around 20 days now, the ulcer looked to get slightly smaller in the first 10 days but it seems to have stopped working.
I would like to know anyone's views on this and opinions of what to do next? How long does a eye ulcer like this take to heal?

Re: Need Advice - Rabbit Corneal Ulcer not going away
First, is you vet a good rabbit savvy vet? Many vets will take on rabbits but really know little more than the basic anatomy of them. If you are happy with your vet (which I'm wondering about seeing as you are asking outside advice) then maybe ask him/her if they would mind you getting a second opinion as it sounds like this as been going on a while now.
I once had a rabbit who was prone to eye ulcers, he had one after another but he had been blinded in a fight with another rabbit before I got him and the injury had not been tended to. But his ulcers cleared relatively quickly.
If you are a member of the RWAF you can get your vet to contact their veterinary consultant, Richard Suanders for a free advice and he is a GOOD rabbit vet.

Re: Need Advice - Rabbit Corneal Ulcer not going away
Hi Woodwench, I have only been taking him to companion care, pets at home in Oxford, UK. I have been there today and just got home. The vet I have seen today is different from the one I have been seeing regularly as he has now left. The vet today said it could take up to two months for it to heal, which was strange because the other vet said around a month. She also said it was quite deep when the other said it the color seemed to be healing in his eye. I said that I wasn't happy as I have been going there now for probably a total of 6-8 times over the past couple of months. They suggested a referral at Great Western Exotics, in Swindon or a ophthalmology vets but I'm totally mixed up after what they have told me today. So frustrating, I just want Murphy to be OK.
He has always been healthy apart from this ulcer. He still seems in good spirits, he's still eating, although he had gone off his water but has started to drink again this week.

I'm sorry to hear about Murphys eye, I would definitely go down the route of getting the referral to the specialist.
Good luck, keep us posted.

Hi Jo.
Just using the remaining drops this week then getting him in for specialist ophthalmology next Monday morning.
This is the place I have found so far which looks promising.

What do you think? Good choice? £180 Consultation charge mind!

Re: Need Advice - Rabbit Corneal Ulcer not going away
You have no idea what caused the ulcer... I mean the P at H didn't offer you any idea?
When Starbuck, the bun with ulcers caused by an attack by other rabbits, it took about three weeks for the ulcers to heal... and, like I said they kept coming back.
£180 is a big consult fee. I really hope that vet sorts him.
Is he insured?

Not insured, never had any issues before with him in the six years we've had him. He is the only rabbit we have owned, no idea what actually caused it. He could have scratched it himself or by timothy hay catching him in his eye, could be bedding also, litter tray shavings, thats what P at H thought.
I wish now that I had took him to a proper consultant first now who specialises in this, I have already wasted probably £200 with P a H.
How much did it cost you for all of the consutations, checkups, drops etc?

Re: Need Advice - Rabbit Corneal Ulcer not going away
It's good that he's still happy and eating. Starbuck was also very active and ate well when he had ulcers.
I had Starbuck a long time ago and he never saw a specialist, just our usual vet.
My present bun, Henry, is terminally ill with an enlarged heart. This was diagnosed by my vets after months of trying to figure out what was wrong with him. It was diagnosed by X-rays and my vets then sought advice from Richard Saunders, the RWAF vet. If you are an RWAF member your vet can seek advice/consult with Richard by sending their findings to him and consulting via email. It is a very good system and free to RWAF members.

I am glad he is eating and drinking well hunni, it sounds as if the little chap is really enjoying his life and I am so pleased. I didn't know that as an RWAF member our vet could do that, it is really worth remembering if ever they need advice on Holly if ever they are baffled.

Re: Need Advice - Rabbit Corneal Ulcer not going away
OK, have just come back from the ophthalmologist and so glad I did. Murphy is completed healed, he had his eye checked and the ulcer is fine. There is a small dent from the ulcer which will be permanent and small scarring which will get better in time but it has definitely healed. Mr Fraser was very good and knowledgeable plus only cost me £88.00.
The ophthalmologist said ulcers should take two weeks to heal so not exactly sure why pets at home kept bringing me back in for two months to keep buying more products but glad it has worked out in the end.
Thank you everyone for the advice and support.

Re: Need Advice - Rabbit Corneal Ulcer not going away
Very glad he's better, long may he hop happily.
From what I've heard about P @ H vets and rabbits I'm certain I would ever use one. A friend of mine rehomed a lovely little yellow Dutch boy from P @ H. He had mites which the P @ H vet treated okay. She wanted to make such he was over the stress of rehoming and the mites so she waited six weeks to use the voucher they gave her to get him neutered (by one of their vets of course) and he died under the anesthetic. I am suspicious of any/all big companies like them, they are cash focused and the Rescue and Vets thing is good publicity (shows they care) and draws in customers.
Does anyone know if P @ H vets are on the RWAF Rabbit Friendly list? My vet is.
