Annie B's Poops Empty Annie B's Poops

Post by Josephine Sat Apr 23, 2016 2:45 pm

Hi everyone, I haven't been on here for ages, so I hope you don't mind me asking for help. At the beginning of last week I noticed that my French Lop, Annie B had stopped eating. I took her to the vet and he tried to give her a thorough examination, she doesn't take kindly to being handled and she can almost knock you out with a kick of her huge feet. He couldn't find anything obvious except a crusty eye, so he gave her anti inflammatory and metoclopramide injections. That seemed to help and she started eating little bits, which I've always found to be a sign that they will be back to normal in a day or two. By Friday she still wasn't eating or pooping properly, so took her back to vet. Again, there seemed to be no obvious gut problem, but vet couldn't give her teeth and ears a proper check because Annie fights them. She is going back on Monday to be sedated, so they can have a good look at what is going on and to take some blood. Over night she has eaten some mashed up broccoli, grated carrot, carrot top and SS nuggets and has produced lots of caecotrophs one with a blob of jelly on. There are no droppings though. She also has meadow hay, Timothy hay, camomile hay and readi grass.and plenty of water.
I hoped to post photos of her poo, I never seen as much coming from one bunny in the past 20 years of having them. Anyway the technology is beyond me.
Could be she is eating too much SS, but do you think there could be another problem. Thanks in advance.

Wave

Pro-c is good for dodgy tums. You can get it in P@H.

As for the underlying cause, first and foremost I would suggest as your vet is doing and get those teethies checked. Is she still eating hay at all?

By SS do you men's science selective? Too many pellets can indeed cause sticky butt in some buns.

How old is Annie B? If she over four, is she on SS 4+?
Also, as suggested a probiotic is good. I feed my boy Protexin Pro-fibre which is a probiotic with fibre, and he loves it.
It's good that she is having a check under sedation and it might be an idea to ask your vet to do some X-rays while she is under. A skull X-ray to check tooth roots, especially on the side of the crusty eye. And some body X-rays from the side and one from above showing her pelvis area. She may have a touch of arthritis in her hips or spine that is putting her off her
food. X-rays are always good to have in their records.

Thanks for all your replies. Yes I do mean Science Selective and all my bunnies are on the normal pellets. Annie was used for breeding before she went to the rescue from which I got her. I think she is coming up to 3 years old. She hasn't really had a problem with a sticky bottom and is a good hay eater, in fact she is nibbling on hay at the moment. Her poop is'nt quite so soft now and is more of the round shape, I'm used to seeing, but it's black rather than the nice golden brown she usually produces. I will still take her to the vet on Monday to have the checks done though. You have all been very helpful, so thanks again.

Left Annie B at the vets yesterday. Her teeth have been thoroughly checked and there are no problems there. Her ears though, were full of wax, so they've been flushed out and I have drops to put in twice a day. She has also had blood taken.
She is eating much better now and her poos are almost back to normal. I really think she had some sort of blockage. She has shed loads of fur lately and spends lots of time grooming herself, so maybe that had something to do with it.

Oh, the dreaded moult. Henry is at it again. In the eightenn months I've had him I think he has had maybe a total of eight (not consecutive) weeks without moulting.
Glad Annie B is pooping okay again. Fur in the tum is awful.
Did the vet say what the cause was for all the wax?

No they didn't say what could have caused it, but I know she does'nt like having the ear drops put in or having her ears cleaned with the cotton wool. We have a huge fight over it each morning and evening. I always tickle the back of her neck afterwards and give Her a couple of fenugreek crunches, so she will forgive me. Wink

I've been meaning to update you all on Annie's progress, but to be honest, I spend too much time on FB, Words With Friends and Pearl's.Peril and trying delete the hundreds of emails I seem to get every day.
Anyway, back to Annie. After lots of tests and scans and money, she was found to have an abcess, the size of a grape, near one of her organs. I can't remember which. She's been through £70 worth of Baytril, but abcess is still there, though has decreased in size. I've had to buy another £70 worth of Baytil, but haven't started giving it yet. She gets so stressed and I'm suffering depression atm and can't handle it.  I don't know what I'm going to say to vet when I go back. I'm being so neglectful.

Won't she take the baytril in a mini shredded wheat? I always managed to get Loll and even Henry to accept it in MSW ... or a Carrot Cruncher treat.
I know what it's like looking after a poorly bun when you're not 100% yourself. My damn gynie problem started up at the weekend so my Lady bits hurt like hell and I'm bloated like a barrage balloon. And it's come on top of an LPR attack. Going out for an hour foraging in the heat we've had has just about finished me, but forage is the main part of Henry's diet these days. His heart condition is really affecting his appetite and forage is the staple in his diet now.
It's very hard to cope.
Could you board her somewhere where they would medicate her?

I wish I could do that, but there arent any boarding places around here. I live just across the road from the vets and I asked if I could pop over each day to have one of the nurses do it, but the cost was going to be horrendous.
Sorry to hear you are so unwell, I hope you feel better soon. x
