Jason passed away - need advice!
Hi all
Sorry it's literally been ageeees since I last posted on here - I got caught up in a bereavement and forgot to keep up with everyone on here.
It's awful I have to return with bad news but I'm really in need of some great Happy Hoppers advice! Sadly my beloved Alaskan rabbit Jason passed away a few days ago which was a complete shock as he seemed perfectly healthy not long before - luckily he went peacefully in his sleep and Jenna, his companion, was able to see his body and come to terms with his death.
Now I'm left with little Jenna and I'm in two minds about what the best option is. She's eating normally and seems perky when with me or out on her play time, I'm just aware that in the time when I can't be with her she's on her own ( she is noticeably down in the periods she's in her hutch ). Jason and Jenna had a EXTREMELY close bond and would do everything together, getting very distressed whenever they were separated.
She's 5 years old now and I'm not sure how she would take to having another bun around - she is very affectionate but was definitely in charge where Jason was concerned ( he was very laid back! )
I would love to know if introducing another rabbit would improve her life, she's still quite young and I don't want her being lonely just because of me.
Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated!

Re: Jason passed away - need advice!
I'm sorry you lost Jason
I would definitely opt for getting a new companion for Jenna.
When we lost Temperance last year her husbun MJ was very upset to the point that we were extremely concerned for his health and well being (he wasn't eating and lost almost 25% of his body weight). Temperance and MJ were very very close, soul buns I'd say. We ended up getting little Philip about a month after losing T (for MJs sake we could not have left it longer), MJ and Philip do not have the same relationship as MJ had with Temperance, but it has made a world of difference to MJ regardless. I also found adopting Philip very difficult and upsetting, not to mention the guilt.
Also Temperance was 7 (we'd had her 1.5yrs at that point, didn't know if she'd had company before) when we adopted MJ (then 2) for her, it was love at first sight and they were inseparable from the moment they met.

Re: Jason passed away - need advice!
Sorry to hear of your loss.
Another bun is probably the way to go but I'd let have a little time to grieve and get over her loss, say two or three months. Then go looking for another laid back buck of a similar age. She sounds to be a determined lady so let her do the choosing.
Good luck and cuddles to Jenna.

Hi Izzy Its lovely to hear from you again but I am sorry it is under sad circumstances I am sorry to hear Jason has passed away
I think you need to read Jenna's behaviour with regard to getting another bun. Like iiisecondcreep says above, she had to get another bun relatively quickly after Temperance passed, for MJ's sake. Some bunnies might be fine on their own but some will not be.
You know Jenna better than anyone and I'm sure you'll figure out what she wants
Sleep well, Jason

Re: Jason passed away - need advice!
Thank you for all the advice guys and hi again Thumper
I will definitely give it a few months before deciding whether to adopt another bun or not like you said Woodwench
I know temperament plays a big part in whether she'd get on with another bun. We rescued Jenna first and didn't even consider getting a companion for her because she seemed so independent, we adopted Jason because of his wonderful character and awful past ( dumped outside a pet shop in a cardboard box near Christmas! ). I can't say I bonded them because it was love at first sight just like your buns iiisecondcreep, the moment she laid eyes on him she was laying beside his run trying to get as close as possible . As that kind of instant bond doesn't always happen it's difficult to know how she'd react, Jason might of been her one and only soulmate.
I never though I'd be in the position for Jenna needing another rabbit around as like I said she was a bit of a free spirit before Jason was around. Maybe because before she didn't know what it was like.
Needless to say, I will give all your cuddles to her and more
I'll keep you updated as it's still early days in her grief

Sorry for your loss of the boy. Did you request a post mortem?
A healthy bunny dying suddenly? All vaccinated?
I won't pour salt in a wound
Send my best and most lved wishes to you.o
How is the bonding going?

Re: Jason passed away - need advice!
It was such a shock that we didn't remember to get a post mortem as we should of done. He was acting strange a few days before and we took him to the vet, full check and everything and there was nothing wrong with him
We brought him home and he seemed his usual self but that evening he was sat in a corner looking very ill. I kept him warm and made sure he drank something, when I woke up that morning he was gone.
Both my buns are vaccinated yearly, wormed regularly and are warm and cosy as they are house rabbits, so very strange indeed.
He was a rescue rabbit so we had no idea how old he was, but he looked no older then 2 years old when we adopted him.
We are still considering another rabbit as Jenna seems lonely and I hate seeing her in that big hutch on her own without a companion.
Thanks for all the vibes and I'll keep you posted ( and hope you had a great Christmas! )

Re: Jason passed away - need advice!
It is dreadful when something like this happens and there is no apparent reason for it love, I wouldn't have thought of a post mortem either under the circumstances, I would be far too upset. Good luck in finding Jenna a friend, I think they know when a loved one has passed on. Yes please do keep us updated.

Re: Jason passed away - need advice!
I'm so sorry. Have you considered to contact local rescues? I had various bunnies that lost their hunbun. And some needed a partner soon others were happy to wait. A good local rescue should give option for bunny speed dating.
Please keep us updated.
