Somethings deffo not right

Post by woodwench on Tue Nov 28, 2017 10:47 am

Reboot is not himself.
I've booked a vet appointment for tomorrow morning.
Ever since I stopped collecting wild forage a couple of weeks ago and he became reliant on veggies for fresh greens etc. he has been a bit 'off'.
As bun owners you know that feeling you get where you KNOW something isn't quite right. I've got it now. Whether it's that he's not happy with the transition from spring/summer/autumn food to winter food I don't know, but he's not right. It seems a patterns is emerging: a couple of good days when everything seems as normal then two or three days where he's quiet and on those days his poos shrink and are hard and misshapen. He eats okay but on the Off days he spreads his food over longer periods and sits around looking half asleep and not with it.
I have noticed a moult stripe across his nose but he's not into a big moult (his coat hasn't got the brownish tinge it has when preparing to moult). But he is grooming himself a lot .... but no hair in the poos! He's verging on a moult but not into it yet he seems to be grooming excessively. He's become a licker!
On good days he is his usual self, though maybe not quite so energetic as he used to be.
I hate this sort of thing. That feeling something's not right but not knowing what. I had that feeling for months with Henry before his diagnosis and it's the pits.... it made me ill then, I hope to goodness I'm not in for another episode.

Anyone have any ideas?

Yes indeed we know when something isn't right love and I hope he just has a few off days. Holly does that and she always, touch wood, springs back again. Perhaps take him to the vet for a checkup. You are in my thoughts and prayers hunni and please do keep us informed.

Just got back.
Alex couldn't find any blockage of potential mass that could cause a blockage. But Reboot has a very sore tum in the area around his colon.
I've given him the first dose of Zantac (Ranitidine) which he has been prescribed twice a day. If there's no improvement in a couple of days (or if he gets worse) then it's in for X.Rays!

I don't expect so. I've never actually heard of it, I've just looked on the RWAF site but can't find anything about it there.
He's had 2 does of Zantac so far and he seems brighter but I can't say that he is getting better yet as he's been doing the 'good day - not-so-good-day' thing for nearly a week now. But he did protest more with the 2nd dose if that's an indicator.

Anyone know what I should expect/look for with Zantac? I've never used it before on my rabbits. Is it fast working? How long is an average treatment? Anything else I should know?

Never heard of zantac.
Bunny box is so they can get xrayed without being given a sedative or anaesthesia.
My vets used it for jetfires xray and then the **** institute used it for the ct scan.
I have a thing about my buns being given a seditive after soundwave ( not the vets fault, he never showed any symptoms of issues with his lungs)

Gemma: maybe you know Zantac as Ranitadine? It's commonly used in treat for sore gut/mobility probs.
We're trying it first. A physical exam found he was very sensitive round his colon but the was no obvious mass causing a blockage or even a partial blockage.

Overnight he appeared to have eaten hardly anything and his poos are small and hard though there's plenty of them. I gave him his Zantac at 8 o'clock and now, at 9-50 he's eaten his Burgess and his tucking into greens.
One prob. with Reboot is he's not a drinker. I've had him just over 7 months now and I've only seen him drink once. I know he's been getting plenty of wild forage greenery plus veggies so that would probably account for not drinking. But I wish he would get into the habit of drinking now winter is here and there's no fresh grass and forage. It would help with his gut no end. I've tried syringing him a little diluted pineapple juice to get him hooked on that so I can wean him onto water but he was disgusted with it!

One thing I know .... he now hates his travel box. He hopped through into the utility room a while ago and saw it at the foot of the stairs. He stamped and huffed at it! I can see I'm going to have my work cut out boxing him up in future.

Yeah i know ranitadine dont know how quickly it works jetfore was in edinburgh the day after she was put on it.

Try a bit of watery based veg a wee bit of cucumber or celery. A tip from the link thumper shared on jetfires post was wet curly kale.

Try just leaving the box about desensitise him to it, leave a wee treat it in for him to find, positive reinforcment

Thanks for that Gemma. I have been wetting his veg. I always wash before feeding anyway but the last couple of days I've not shaken them before serving.
He seems brighter today.... he had a go at biting me this evening when I gave him the Zantac. Not a true bite, but he let me feel his teeth in a manner clearly telling me what would happen if I didn't stop sticking that foul thing in his gob! I'm not looking forward to tomorrows dosings!
His poo's this evening were bigger and he's more active tonight.... not his normal 1,000 miles an hour self, more like 250 miles an hour and that's 200 miles an hour faster than last night.
Fingers still crossed though.... I shall feel better when he's teasing me again.

There's no much change but he is still eating and I'm not quite sure but his poos may be a little larger, they certainly don't look as hard and I can see readigrass in them. He seems to prefer readigrass to hay at the moment.

Back to the Vet this morning. He's gradually stopping eating his food. Hardly any greens yesterday and no hay, just some Burgess .... not what I want at all and he's not drinking. He looks so dejected and I spent all night down in the sitting room with him and he never moved from the spot behind my chair eleven hours and went fourteen hours between loo visits.

I'm worried sick!
