Procedure for ear cleaning

Post by gemma997 on Sat Feb 24, 2018 5:56 pm

Does any one know how vets syringe and clean rabbits ears.

Last resort for thundercracker but i really dont want him sedated,
have got few ideas I want to run past my vet obviously dont want to hurt thundercracker.

Just wondering what the procedure is so I know if im at least on the right track.

I was given ear drops for my boys to help clean them, I think you just put the drops in, massage the ear base then clean up the fluid as it comes out... TBH I get the bunny sitter to do it. I dono where they are right now but I'll look them out and let you know.

Thanks hunny,  would be good to see if it the same as what i was given.
He was on ear drops and that just made him scratch, he gave himself a sore ear. The ear wash settles it but as soon as ypu stop they just irratate him again.
Vet says longer term would need to sedate him and syringe them, which i really dont want him sedated.

I was thinking of a baby suction syringe, can get puppy ones just those wee blue squeezy things or the silent ear hoovers you get for babies. Obviously would depend on the vet agreeing to use them, i wouldnt do it myself.

He's currently going through a bad molt and was feeling sorry for himself. On spray of pet remedy and total different bun Laughing
He currently has a shoe fetish.

I have never given ear drops to a bunny love but I have to dogs and cats. I always used to massage the base of the each afterwards which is something they seemed to enjoy. Good luck sweetie and please keep us posted. Holly is moulting too, don't they go into a dreadful sulk lol?!

I've never had a bun with ear probs (gawd, that's tempting fate). What about asking the vet nurse's advice.
Reboot is in a moult too, I'm actually wondering if he's stuck in a moult as he was at it when he fractured his leg last Nov. and he's been at it ever since.

He going for a nail trim a week on sat, the vet called there to keep using the wash and then they will check his ears again.

Vet thinks its stress from losing jetfire that kickes it all off.

Mine are due for their ear, claws and teeth check which will be undertaken by the nurses at the vets. They are not so expensive lol! Holly is due to her vaccination though and a vet has to do that so we will have to make two appointments.

I hope his little ears get better soon love.

What's the ear drops medicine called? Never knew there's one for rabbits. Does it help them?

I used small pet ear wipes in my early days as a rabbit owner but they don't go beyond where the ear will fold. I wouldn't advise a DIY job myself, keep with the vet they should prescribe the right meds even if he needs anesthetizing. Ears can lead to all manner of probs. Vets every time.

Ours always have their ears checked when we go for a tooth and nail exam. I have been very lucky so far, I have never had a bunny with ear problems. I hope all turns out OK hunni.

Vet wants to continue using the wash and he will lok in at the other options if it comes to it.

Dembunnies - will look them out when i get home, think as usual they were for cats.

Woodwench - i would never do a diy job ever, i am working with other solutions with the vet that we can try before he has to be sedated.

Jo- it depends on the nurse that trimming nails, they have a rabbit and guinea pig trained nurse so she'll check ears but the others will only trim nails and weigh.

Well last night the wash dislodged a whole load of stuff and now he not eating( he munches some sweets) on way home to check on him and possibly get an emergamcy appointment at the vet

Gemma: I know you would never do anything risky that might harm him. I just thought you were looking for something not prescribed by a vet. My mistake.
Hope he rallies soon; they don't half put us through it.

Our nurses are pretty good too love, I think they are all pretty practiced in doing things for piggies and bunnies and the annoying thing is when we try to do anything for them they make such a fuss, but when the nurses do it they are as good as gold lol. Hissy

It's not an ear infection that's affecting his jaw movement making eating painful?

I hope he starts pigging-in soon.

Give him a long nose rub from me.
