UPDATE: What's Wrong With Reboot?

Post by woodwench on Tue Jun 19, 2018 6:22 pm

So you may have read all the posts I've made on HH over the last couple of weeks about Reboots health problem. He is not improving, in fact he seems to be getting worse. His poos remain small, hard(ish) though not misshapen and tiny like going into or out of stasis, and there are plenty of them. He eats reasonably well most of the time but has had days when he's been reluctant to eat. He is lethargic most of the time and looks depressed, often tense. He stretches his back in that odd fashion where they push down on their bottoms and when doing the general dog-like stretch he will stretch his front legs but avoid stretching his back. When he has been lying at full stretch, legs out behind him and he gets up  I've noticed he doesn't straighten his toes on the right hind paw like he does on the left, there seems to be a delay on righting that paw to stand on it.
Sometimes he seems quite bright, maybe for hours, even a couple of days but he always slides back into this awful state.
Does anyone recognise these symptoms?
Could it be pain from the arthritis?
A trapped nerve that affects him and makes him not want to move?

Any ideas anyone.

I'm fast becoming convince I shall lose him.

It does sound like it could be arthritis, is he on any pain relief at the moment?

He's been on 0.6 Loxicom once a day for 2 weeks but this morning his vet said to try him on that dose twice a day for four days to see how he responds.

It's really wierd. This morning he was full of himself, interested in mischief and rushing around. I even got a lovely running binky! He was interested in things all morning and then rested in the afternoon. But about 5pm he went to his crate and lay there looking tense and unhappy.
He has his 0.5 of Loxicom each morning at 7-30 and again in the evening at 7-30. He is picky with his food. Hardly a stalk of hay since Tuesday night and he's eating a museli - burgess mix but spreading it out over the day just eating a few bits then leaving it. Yet he is showing excitement when I am getting his food ready. He won't bother with his treat ball any more and even his fenugreek crunchers and dandelion root are being eaten a bit at a time.
I'm speaking to the vet in the morning as the four day trial of the increased Loxicom dose ends tonight. I'm just out of ideas.

Oh, darling, I am so glad he had his binkying session but so very sorry he declined later on in the day. We all just wish he would get well for good and stay that way, Please let us know what the vet says when you next visit.

His four day double Loxicom dosage ended last night so I rang the vet this morning for advice on what to do as he is still not eating properly or pooing properly and the good morning, bad evening thing is still going on. I ended up having a row with the vet as he didn't seem to know where to go from here and when I asked if he would consult with Richard Saunders he flatly refused to consult with anyone. I pointed out that with this being a 3 week problem and Reboot having had the stress and pain of it all that time I thought a consult with RS better than trailing on a 2 hour plus journey with all its extra stresses and the GA for the MRI and another long journey home was to be taken as a last resort and a consult with a top rabbit vet would be better. He refused and said and said I could take him elsewhere!
I said I was watching my animal suffer and that I felt long journeys were just too much now and if he wasn't prepared to go for a consult then would he have Reboot in and PTS. Again he refused.
What the F is it with this guy. He won't consult, he won't PTS but he'll gladly let me go elsewhere. I could say we were having a personality clash except that he hasn't got one. He's colder than the iceberg that sank Titanic!

I'm at my wits end here. It's bad enough with Reboot but my friend Mike died last Tuesday (19th) and what with that and Meg's future in the balance... I'm shattered.

I am so sorry to hear about your friend Mike Sad Hugs

I am also sorry you are having a tough time with your vet, I am baffled as to why a vet would refuse to consult with an expert this seems like very poor practice indeed. Is it his own practice?

Is there the possibility of seeing another vet?

Re: UPDATE: What's Wrong With Reboot?

Post by woodwench on Sun Jun 24, 2018 8:45 am

Thanks for sympathies and concern. This vet owns the practice. He is South African and was a State vet there responsible for wildlife and farm animals in Zululand.... that's where I think he should have stayed! There's a helluva difference between hippos and rabbits!
Everything was fine between me and the practice when Alex was there but after he left and I was dealing solely with this vet (he was alone for about four months due to national shortage of vets or his lack of personality!) things cooled very rapidly. There was another incident after Reboot bloated at Christmas time when he raised his voice and was damned uncivil, now this.
There won't be a third. I don't know how the RCVS's feel about the way he treats his clients. I've reported my Dr to the GMC before so I'm damned sure I could do this if it's the type of behaviour frowned upon by them.
At the moment I'm waiting to see what happens in the morning, I emailed him yesterday saying I would consider an MRI if one could be done nearer home and if he would consult another vet before hand. But whatever happens tomorrow, as soon as my bun is recovered (if he recovers) I shall leave that practice even if it means going back to the previous practice where I clashed with its owner over Lil Loll. There is a good young vet there who is into rabbits and was really good with rabbits. I'm not staying with someone who won't commit to a course of treatment, won't consider the animals welfare as a priority and won't talk to a renowned expert about the case he is failing on. And I'll be damned if I will be spoken to like that again.

Sorry for the rant but I've got so much emotional cr*p going on right now I feel I'm drowning and ranting is my way of shouting for help.

I am so sorry to hear about your friend Mike hunni, I can only imagine how devastated you must feel with all that is going on. He does sound a cold ******* that vet and he doesn't sound as if he knows what he is talking about either.

I agree Woodwench love, he should have stayed in South Africa. They are known for their coldness and lack of any sentimentality. I think it is utterly disgraceful that he shouted at you like that love, how dare he shout at a client. I would have been straight around to the office manager and also let the other vets what happened. You can report doctors so you can report vets but I understand that you want to get Reboot well again first.

Thank you for keeping us posted love and good luck for tomorrow.

Lots of love

So sorry to hear about your friend.

Sorry you've had to go through this with reboot also, especially of the vet is being a total pr*ck.
I def would say report him, what if a less confident owner is taking there rabbit there and they are getting that treatment they will be in turmoil.

No one should be working with public if they cant deal with public.

Re: UPDATE: What's Wrong With Reboot?

Post by woodwench on Thu Jun 28, 2018 9:54 am

Reboot saw the local exotics specialist vet yesterday (who agreed he didn't need MRI at this stage) and we had a long consult and he took all details of his history and health probs. He wanted my account of his problems to compare with 'the other' vet. Finally he took bloods.
He said Reboot had a beautiful coat, was bright and well muscled and the perfect weight (2.61). Nothing pointed to anything wrong with his organs and he doubted very much there was a spinal injury as 'the other' vet had.
I had been thinking hard since my encounter with 'the other' vet on Sat. morning and I'd gone over and over Reboot's problems since last Nov. I'd found one common factor. One thing that immediately preceded each of his gut/poo/pee episodes - a GA. After his GA on 4th Dec which showed his fractured leg it took me 20 days to get him eating/pooing right. Then he had a sedative to have his mouth checked after he stuck the twig in it and another, shorter, episode followed (shorter because the sedative was brief?). Then on the 4th June he had another GA which showed his arthritis and away he goes into stasis and is only now, after 20 days, he's showing signs of recovery. I put this to the vet yesterday and he thought it a possibility that Reboot doesn't react well to GA's and it could be that's the problem. Anyway he took the blood and sent off to the lab: results, hopefully, tomorrow.

Had two good chats with Reboot's vet yesterday (Tuesday) and he told me the results of the blood tests were good but after careful study of all his X-rays he says Reboot has arthritis in his spine and in the stifle joint of one hind leg. Our main concern though at this point in time his to get him eating properly again. Once he's back stuffing his chops with hay we can concentrate on getting him on a pain relief regime that will handle the arthritis. He is eating but very pickily and hardly a stalk of hay!
Keep your fingers crossed for him.

Seems there's no change. He won't eat hay, picks at pellets, will eat wild forage and carrot tops and herbs. He just lies around looking miserable. It's really getting me down. Wild forage is hard to come by now. Everything is so dry and the farmers have been and cut down all the green lanes where I used to forage.
We are trying him on 0.8 loxicom every morning now instead of 0.5 and we are giving it at one go instead of half morning and half at night; just for a week or so to see if that will perk him up and encourage him to move around more and eat better.
He's just a misery these days.... how I wish he would start being a rat bag again.

Andy is a great vet. He was one of the two vets who looked after my animals for over 30 years. He is an exotics specialist and I trust him implicitly.
Unfortunately he works at the practice owned by the vet I had issues with over Lil Loll's treatment when she was so arrogant and condescending. But Reboot is Andy's patient and, thank goodness, we won't be going back to his other vet, EVER!
