Coccidiosis.

Post by Sixer on Sun Oct 19, 2008 9:49 am

Earlier this year I lent our spare hutch to someone who urgently needed one. It was very difficult to get it back when finished with (it was too new to give up on and I had plans to use it alongside a run for BJ and Rosie.)

It now appears that the person I lent to hutch to has lost two rabbits to coccidiosis. I have no idea how long ago the hutch was used but one of the rabbits that has died was living in it around March time.

I had bleached the hutch and Cuprinoled it already before I found this out and am currently not using the hutch (which is a blessed relief). I am not sure if bleach will kill coccidiosis spores and have found other conflicting advice on what will. Can anyone tell me what will eradicate the spores?

I am not really keen on using the hutch again but for peace of mind what else do I need to do?
Thanks, Vanessa.

Have a look here Vanessa.

Veterinary Grade disinfectants such as Trigene and Virkon are ineffective against Coccidia and E. Cuniculi. Coccidia can be killed using Jeyes Fluid and E.Cuniculi using a 1:10 bleach solution. Both can be killed by extreme heat and steam cleaning is also recommended. As Jeyes will kill all of the above mentioned diseases we recommend this is the product you use but there are a few points to be aware of.

Jeyes is full of ammonia and is highly toxic to cats, it can also cause breathing problems in people and other animals. As such it must be used in a well ventilated area, preferably outside. You must dilute (we suggest using very hot water) Jeyes to the given strenght on the container and scrub all surfaces well. It is then vitally important that you throroughly rinse the hutch several times over and leave it to dry and air for 2-3 days before moving any rabbits in.

Thank Sooz - we do have some Jeyes in. The smell is vile.

I really do not fancy using this hutch again but I know OH will not be amused. It was only used for about six months before I lent it out. I will certainly not be using it before next year - if at all.

Oh no, I would have a massive pair of worry pants on too!

I won't even go to a friends house who has bunnies because I'm sure one died of EC related problems and I'm terrified of bring any spores home. Embarassed
