Urgent advice needed please re wormer

Post by AprilGirl on Sun Jul 05, 2009 4:46 pm

Hi
Shadow is 12 weeks old and my vet gave me the pancur wormer to give him over 9 days, I held off till today due to him having his VHD injection and I didn't want to overload his system.
Anyway as this is the first time I asked my husband to help, I wrapped Shadow in a towel and hubby was giving him the wormer, I said to him just one graduation was needed. I thought that was pretty straight forward except the stupid prat of a man he is somehow thought that meant the whole damn tube!!! Obviously I realised when it started oozing out Shadows mouth he was still pushing the plunger and pushed it away. I don't think he got too much but obviously more than he should! What should I do? Hubby says I didn't make it clear but how much clearer could I have made it???
Please Help asap I'm worried for my bunny!
Thank you Emma x

Just rang my vet who of course is closed but they have an emergency number rang them and am now waiting for them to ring me back as they have to ring the poisons unit! Crying or Very sad
I'm going to kill my husband doing this to my baby bunny! That'll teach me to ask for help on a job I should do myself!
I'm now worried sick

He should be ok, lots of people have apparently overdosed their buns with panacur rabbit (I did a google search). Always best to go with what the vet says though. Let us know what he says Smile

Thank you for your reply
Just got back from the emergency vet. On the phone they said they would keep him over night incase he needed a drip, but when she checked him over and looked how much he's taken she wasn't worried and said it would be less stressful for him if he came home.
I'm keeping a close eye on him and I'm to phone if I'm at all worried, she said he may have a little vomiting or the runs in which case he'll need a drip.
He's stretched out on the floor now and seems fine so fingers crossed all should be ok!
He's had a little water and a nibble of hay, the vet said to do everything as normal!
My poor bun, we'll not be talking to the hubby tonight! Wink

I thought they didn't but when the vet said that I just assumed she knew what she was talking about!
So have I only got the runs to worry about then?

(ps your Shadow is gorgeous. All your buns are tho)

Hi Emma - perhaps you need to review your vet as if she thinks rabbits can be sick then she doesn't sound very rabbit savvy - there are a lot of non rabbit savvy vets around and you want to make sure you have one who is on the ball for if something happens.

Morning everyone
Wave
So far so good, he spent the night in the kitchen, he's eaten and drank as usual and his poo's have been normal. He's currently lying flat out in front of the tv.

Hope that he's going to be ok, the vet said it could take up to 30 hrs after the overdose for any effects. I'm hoping with everything that he hardly got any, most of it came back out, obviously he couldn't swollow that much so quick. Looking at the tube there is still over half left and as most came out his mouth, I don't think he got as much as I first feared.

Rachel - I didn't go to my normal vet, it was the emergency one which I think is attached to the PDSA. It is frightening to think that they are giving this advice and not knowing their subject! My own vet's are accredited with a small animal certificate thing and she seems to be knowledgeable.

Sorry Emma. just seen all this, glad Shadow is OK this morning, that must have been a shock, to say the least. Hope he's ok. Have you spoken to your vet since? Smile
