What to do
OH called me at work this afternoon and told me I needed to get home because thumper wasn't right.
He came home from work and thought she had left us he was relieved when she popped her head up. She was lying on her side and had obviously been stuck there for most of the day. Food was hardly touched which would suggest he's right. He took her downstairs and she fell over a couple more times. Back legs stiff from lying all day.
By the time I got home she was up and walking but when she tried to pick up speed she fell on her side again.
I've not called the vet, I don't suppose there's much they can do about an almost 11 year old bunny who's not stable on her feet.
She stands like this these days, and I don't know why, do any of you know?
I'm not sure if its because her tumor gets in her way.
I'm going to keep an eye in her tonight and see what tomorrow brings, re taking her to the vet.
Is this a poor existance? Is it cruel to keep her alive even though 99% of the time she is a happy, cheeky bunny? She's filling her face right now.
I'm expecting my buncam any day (hopefully tomorrow) so if it happens again I'll be able to nip home and help her.
Any thoughts/advice gratefully received x

Re: What to do
oh so sorry to hear this! sadly that is exactly how Ziggy had to sit over his last few weeks because he couldn't move properly, we first thought he had a bit of arthritis, but reckon it was more to do with his nerves stopping being able to control his limbs and support him! I hope it's just a funny turn! I couldn't cope with much more bad news about animals!! sending you both lots of vibes!!

Re: What to do
It is worth a vet trip because the symptoms could indicate e.c. Or maybe you could try her on Panacur. Either way the vet is likely to help you get some perspective on what is happening.

Re: What to do
What a tough question, and one only you can answer.... but I think you have answered it with the follow-up sentence. If she is well, and happy, most of the time then perhaps the times when she is not feeling so good are manageable? I also agree with CBF - it's worth a trip to the vet because if she is in some discomfort then there might be medication which could help improve her quality of life for a bit longer yet.Thumper2001 wrote:Is this a poor existance? Re: What to do
Could she have had a minor stroke? It might be worth getting a vet to look over her and discount the more obvious things. Perhaps her days are drawing to a close. 11 is a phenomenal age for a rabbit.

Re: What to do
Hi guys. Thanks for your replies.
She's bright enough (chewing my dressing gown sleeve as I try to type this!) and eating and drinking fine.
She has been falling over for a while but up until now, I've always been here to pick her up. The thought of her lying there all day and no one there to help her makes me
It's almost as if in her head she is still a young thing who thinks she can pull anything off and pushes herself too far, her little body isn't capable of the silly thing she tries to do
When she tries to move at speed faster than a slow walk, her back end seems to swing out. But again, this is nothing new, just more pronounced today. And her back leg is up near her head when she's lying sometimes.
I'm going to call the vet tomorrow, but I'm sure I know what they will say, 'she is old and it might be kinder to PTS' but they don't see the cheeky happy monkey she is most of the time!

Re: What to do
Well if they do say that and you know she is happy and contented, albeit a bit wobbly, you don't have to do it. You know her better than them and her emotionally health is just as important.

Re: What to do
We have had 4 buns in the past with tumours so I know what you are going through, is the tumour in her tummy as I am wondering if it is pressing on a nerve now and then as this would cause her to fall over.
I think for her age and having a tumour she does remarkably well though Bless her heart.

Re: What to do
It's a mammary tumor she has
Sorry Maysie, I did not mean to upset you They have said this to me before when I took her there because she had a REALLY dodgy tum - but pro-c is keeping that in check. Unless she takes a huge turn for the worse during the night, I guarantee that she will not be PTS.
I guess they say it because they only see her at her worst, whereas I see the cheeky happy thumper that hides away when we are at the vet.
Just half an hour ago she was grunting at my feet looking for treats.
Sorry again for upsetting you x

Re: What to do
I phoned the vet. She was really nice and said I should keep a close eye on her and get back to them if she deteriorates at all.
She's still wobbly on her feet but is bright and bouncy this morning! I've just satisfied her mange tout addiction for a few hours
To my surprise she didn't say to have her PTS. She said it would only be something to consider when the bad days outweigh the good. Phew.
The webcam arrived Fingers crossed I can get it going today so this can never happen again
