*Waves* Hi everyone, Erin here joining you from Cyprus!
A brand new and unexpected rabbit owner, we have ended up with a beautiful buck who was destined to be eaten by a landlord who didn't want his occupants to keep pets. I'll explain the whole story on that later, it's a long one!

So here's a quick overview of what I have to work around, in Cyprus rabbits are more so food not pets even those sold in pet shops and of the 'fancy' varieties. Because of this view on rabbits it means:
There are few rabbit products anywhere
No rabbit pellets (they feed the rabbits on seed mixes!! o.O)
No spaying of does
No vaccines
No rescues or centers for rabbits
No large enough accommodations
No ready built runs
Few vets willing to treat or even see rabbits

Luckily I've been a budget rodent owner for years so I have picked up plenty of tricks when it comes to spoiling pets with toys and entertainment without spending money! Of course the other side of rabbit care is so different from rodent care I'm in need of some help in places which is why I'm here!

Nice to meet you guys, if I could borrow your help I'm about to post a thread on identifying my new rabbits breed!
Erin x

Hi Erin and welcome to HH Wave

I think you will find a lot in common with Holly(Gentl) who lives in a part of the USA with similar views on rabbits.

Hi Erin!

Welcome to HH!

Well done on your rescue!

You have come to the right place!!

The first thing to know about buns is that it is vital to get their diet and space right

Are you planning on keeping him as a house bunny? If so this is a good way of getting him thence he needs to thrive. Often they can use their cage as a base, and free range through the house. (Lots of us ave house buns so can offer you lots of help and advice)

So - food wise he should be eating 80% hay and grass, 10% pellets (which may be tricky) and 10% fresh veg (not carrots). Deffo no seed mix. You may be able to get pellets through the Internet :-).

Please do feel free to join in the chat and ask as any questions as you need to!

Hello and welcome Wave

If you can get your bun plenty of good quality fresh hay and some suitable greens, he may well thrive without the pellet part of his diet.

I do hope you can find a vet who would be open-minded enough to see him when needs be though.

Nice to meet you and I'm looking forward to hearing more about your lucky bunny Very Happy

Hello from Cyprus! Empty Re: Hello from Cyprus!

Post by MrJackRabbit on Sun Sep 01, 2013 8:17 pm

Hi, sorry I left those extra details out in my post!
He's not able to be a house rabbit right now as we live in a rented house but the plan for his accommodation is a large hand-built hutch joined to a 6-8 foot long run. He'll have access to the run all the time except late at night as the risk of him being stolen for food is higher than I want to admit so once I go to bed he will be padlocked in his hutch (the hutch will be made big so as to accommodate the time he spends in it) I'm going as big as I can without getting into trouble about him being there! He will spend most of his time free ranging in my work room anyway as it has already been hamster proofed for my other naughty pet!

For his diet he has as much hay as his heart desires, no shortage there! However grass/weeds are an impossible part of the diet as we don't have any growing here, its too hot and dry for grass to survive. He does have daily vegetables and greens to help make up for this and I do the best I can on trying to supplement it.

For pellets I've spent months looking for someone who will ship them for my sisters rabbits but with no success. Few places ship here and those who do are quoting €60-€100 postage for less than a months supply of pellets which I'm sure you can understand in the current financial situation is just too much. With the help of the rabbit community I have made an emergency homemade pellet recipe that consist of liquidated lettuce, parsley, hay and oats with flour and water to bind them. I know its not as good as if I could get the real commercially bought ones but he really enjoys them and its seems to be better than no pellets at all! I've even tried to get pet shops to order them in but they insist that the 'sheep pellets' they sell are adequate enough which I know they are not even close! Sad

Thanks so much for the welcome, I understand given where I live that this is going to be far from easy to give Jack 100% proper care but I am trying my very best to do what I can and he is going to be as spoiled as any little rabbit can be, I work just a few hours in the middle of the day so he is by my side the rest of the time and I'm up until the early hours trying to find equivalent care methods that can be used in Cyprus.

I have my eye on a vet who from what I know will see any animal regardless of species and I am going to find out how much it will be to get Jack neutered if he will do it. We hope he will as he neuters wild cats regularly and as neutering doesn't vary too much from animal to animal he might consider it.

I hope I can at least get close to the best care possible for Jack! x

Wave Welcome Erin!  I'm so very glad you joined us!  I once had the opportunity to talk to a rabbit owner in Cyprus!  She spoke of the problems you have mentioned.  She had her buns on a good hay, herb and veg diet.  No pellets at all and they thrived.

Finding a good hay supplier is what is important.  Timothy hay is the best.  Alfalfa hay is too rich for adult bunnies.  Oat hay has a bit too much fat for exclusive usage. I am unfamiliar with what native grasses grow well there. It is possible that you will have a good quality meadow or orchard hay available. You have a delightful variety of herbs available to you because of your climate.

Jack is a very lucky bunny to have you as his Bunny Parent! Thumbs Up  Welcome! Hugs

Welcome Erin Wave

As regards pellets, we tend to only feed a tiny amount and there is a train of thought which advocates not using them at all, so as long as he gets loads of fibre and some veggies, he should be fine. Fibre is the m poo st important thing as it helps wear down teeth and keep guts healthy.

I see your little guy is just 4 mo old. He can still have alfalfa hay so he can get enough calcium for good bones. In older grown bunnies the high calcium can cause kidney and bladder stones.
