Blind bunny

Hi All,

So after a year of trying to find out what is wrong with Milo and his eyes with suspected E.C, tumors etc.. the eye specialist advised that its probably a genetic issue that caused glucoma.

She thinks he has max 20% signt and he is on xalatan and trusopt to control the pressure.

I wonder if anyone has any advce for a blind bunny how to make his life as good as possible.

Obvioulsy not moving things around etc..

Do anyone live with a blind bunny that i can speak to?

My poor boy really hasnt had much luck..

Awww bless him, poor thing. I am sending lots of vibes and hugs.

We suspected that Taffy had lost his sight after suffering EC. Sadly we lost him before we had a chance to do much to help him live with it  

We did make him a pen, just one mesh panel tall, and lined it with light-coloured fleeces so he had the best chance of seeing where the walls were. Apart from that, I think it is like you say, let him have his safe area and don't move things.

I can't remember if he currently has a companion bun? I have heard of blind buns where you could barely tell they could not see, and of companion buns who have done much to look after the blind one.

Thanks everyone.. he does get around quite well.

we were looking to take him on hols next year but since nothing is booked we are going to give the holiday a miss as the change in surroundings might be too scary for him.

I just wondered if there were any more sensory toys that might be good for him etc...

I would think about feeding strong smelling foods to stimulate him such as herbs, flower petals - things that will get him excited.

I have a g. pig who is almost blind due to cataracts. She still negotiates the whole garden on her own and has no reduction in quality of life that I can see.

Thank you.. it is amazing how they cope with things that a human would be depressed with.

Just goes to show you how amazing they are compare to humans!

We had a little Holland Mini Lop named Lady that became blind when she was about 6 or 7. She coped so well we were not even aware of it! We hadn't moved any furniture around since we had a toddler in the house and kept the floor clean of clutter.

She had stopped going on the kitchen floor but we just attributed that to it being slicker with the new wax we were using. The real reason was that the places she had left her scent markings were being removed each time we mopped.

The vet explained that rabbits can get around amazingly well by following their own scent markings. When they chin something it leaves their particular signature. Since rabbits manage well in total darkness in their burrows they can adapt to blindness easier than other animals as long as things are not moved and their scent markings are not removed. They have an incredible memory for navigation using only their nose and ears as guide.

We had Lady until she was 8. She died of ovarian cancer. Sadly, we didn't know does needed to be spayed. She had a wonderful, full life. I'm sure your bun can too.

How did she get along with your toddler when she was blind?

We have a little one ont he way and I dont know how to make his adjustment as easy as possible for him.
He is the love of my life and I dont want this to scare him.. we did think before we knew his eyes were bad about putting off a child but then felt that we would be waiting for him to go to the bridge which felt mean and as we didnt know about is eye and he's lived with a toddler before in his previous home. we thought he would be fine.
Just now im a little concerned for him as he wont be able to see this baby.

Lady was just amazing. The crying would upset her! We would just keep them in separate parts of the house which was no small fete since it was so small. Lady would seek refuge in our son's room. That was where her cage/food/water were. Our granddaughter was taught to never go in there. If Kayla was REALLY determined we would just close the door to that room until she lost interest. The only time Lady was secured in her cage was if we were going to be gone for more than a couple of hours but it was a place she felt safe and would go there on her own.

We let her pet the bunny if and only if we were holding her(the toddler). Lady was a very sociable bunny and loved people. When we would hold Kayla Lady would sometimes hop up. The only real trouble we had was that our granddaughter would hide bits of food here and there.....like under the sofa cushions. Some of the foods she hid were not good for bunnies. Lady discovered chocolate. It never seemed to have an adverse affect on her but we always worried.
