Welcome to Happy Hoppers

Welcome to HH forums, a friendly & informative forum site for rabbit owners and rescuers everywhere. We are striving to provide an environment where people feel happy and comfortable asking questions and giving advice relating to the wellbeing of all domestic rabbits.Whilst the site is predominantly pro-rescue due to the excessive numbers of unwanted rabbits in the UK, we acknowledge that breeders have a wealth of experience to share and we ask all users to be respectful towards each other regardless of differing views. Only in this way can we move forward in getting the message across that rabbits deserve the same care and respect as any other pet.

To get the most from this forum and to gain access to all areas we strongly recommend joining, even if only to browse the information contained within. Registration is easy and can be completed in just a few minutes.

If you experience any problems with registration admin can be emailed at happy_hoppers@yahoo.co.uk.

These rabbits are updated regularly but it is possible rabbits shown here may have been rehomed before then, however, rabbit rescues are never empty so please do enquire about other rabbits the rescues have available.

Rabbits & Hot Weather

As summer has finally arrived it's time to start taking some precautions for our bunsters who, although they can deal well with cold weather, tend to suffer in the heat so it is imperitive that measures are taken to keep them cool. Complications that can arise in the summer include Heat Stroke (Hyperthermia) and Fly Strike (Myiasis) both of which can be fatal very quickly.

It is important that rabbits are provided with adequate shade and fresh, cold water to keep them hydrated. Many rabbits will drink more if water is offered in a bowl and a ceramic bowl is usually stable enough to remain unspilt.

To keep rabbits cool 'Ice Pods' can be purchased online or from petstores but a simple homemade icepack will also suffice. To do this simply freeze a plastic drinks bottle of water and then either wrap it in a towel or pull an old sock over it (to prevent it causing a freeze burn should it come into direct contact with the rabbits skin) and place it in the hutch or run.

It is also imperitive that you check your rabbits rear end at least once a day to make sure that no feaces or urine has become attached, making them more attractive to flies and at risk of Myiasis which can very quickly kill. Rabbits who are prone to problems with their hygiene such as the elderly or disabled should be 'rear guarded', this is a product available from your vets which prevents fly eggs from hatching into maggots. More information on Myiasis can be found HERE.Please also ensure hutch hygiene is carefully managed by cleaning toileting area's everyday.
