Spring - out of sorts again. Empty Spring - out of sorts again.

Post by Sixer Sat Jan 11, 2014 11:01 am

Eaxctly a week after Spring lost interest in food she is at it again. Last night when I took the veg around at tea time - no spring greens - Spring leaped away from the bowl as I put it down as though I was offering her poison. As I had just finished washing up I wondered if she could smell the washing up liquid on my hands. When I went back by her and Gabe's wendy house she was sat nibbling hay so I wasn't too alarmed.

However at supper time/final check of the day she did the same again and like last week was looking spooked. After checking on the other buns I went back to Spring/Gabe and stood in the rain watching through their window. Again she was picking at hay whilst Gabe was tucking in to the dried herbs. As I stood watching a small mouse appeared at my feet having come round the side of Spring and Gabe's house. Their wendy house is on a paved area but could it be that there are mice under the wendy house which is spooking Spring?

This morning Spring refused her pellets first thing and was looking miserable. I have given her some tummy meds, painkiller and some tummy rubs. When I checked on her 30mins later I think she may have eaten some dried herbs but am not 100% sure. I work on a Saturday morning so I am just hoping that she is back to normal on my return. Like last week there was nothing untoward in the litter tray.

There is obviously something going on, a foodstuff that is upsetting, something untoward internally....... Sad I fear another trip to the vets is in the offing  Sad

Oh no, poor Spring Sad

I really hope she's improved when you get home, and that if not you get some answers as to what is going on with her Hugs

Oh no, how strange.

Is she generally a nervy bun?

Remind me what they looked at last time? Has she been 100% normal all week, or a bit quiet?

I always, always suspect teeth first now. Last summer we went through all sorts with Reggie, including blood tests and head x-rays, and her mouth was looked at by three vets. We kept her going for a good 2 weeks or so on Metaclopramide, Ranitidine and Metacam - without those she simply would not eat. It was only the third vet who said she *thought* she saw a tiny sore right at the back of her tongue, so they knocked her out for a look and sure enough she had the tiniest molar spurs. As soon as they were dealt with she was absolutely back to normal.

Loads and loads of vibes for Spring, I hope they can get her sorted out with minimal stress to you both (and minimal expense)  Hugs Hugs Hugs

Spring is absolutely fine again now. Matthew checked on her mid-morning, she accepted a treat from him then. I have just finished cleaning out, Spring and Gabe have had 30 mins out in the grass. She has been binkying, playing chase with Gabe and nibbling some grass. She is now eating hay with Gabe.

Spring was hospitalised a week before Christmas when she stopped eating then. She had an X ray then which showed nothing untoward. She did have her teeth sorted then too - there was a spur on a lower molar but it is hard to say whether this caused her to stop eating or whether it had developed because she had been syringe fed for 3 days and was eating very little on her own. When she saw the vet last week her teeth looked perfectly OK - though of course it is difficult to see the furthest back molars when a rabbit is conscious. I wouldn't have thought her teeth would need doing again so soon. When she had them sorted in December this would have been the first time since she came to us 16 months ago. The vet last week couldn't feel/hear anything wrong internally but he wasn't my preferred rabbity expert vet.

She has been normal all week as far as I can tell and there has been nothing untoward in the litter tray. The one I have just cleaned out was full of large, in the main, golden poops.

I wouldn't say she was a particularly nervy bun (unless living with Gabe has an effect). Maybe I over-reacted this morning  Hmmm I am so used to Gabe and Spring wolfing down their food in one go. The other pairs, particularly Hollie and Herbie tend to pick at their's over a much longer period of time. And at the moment Spring is somewhat distrustful of me which makes it harder to assess her. I am sure she knows that if she refuses food I will pick her up to check her over, so like this morning, when she refused the pellets she huddled on the corner. In discomfort or simply in trepidation at being caught?????

So she seems fine for now. If/when this happens again I hope that it is on a day when I can get an appointment with the rabbity vet. I guess blood tests may be appropriate if this continues.

I'm sorry to hear she has been feeling off again.

I am a big believer that rabbits are such creatures of habit that if they behave differently something isn't right. I'm glad she seems to have recovered so quickly ? Is she moulting (unlikely I know) or anything?

Thank you for asking. She seems OK again now, is tucking into hay and veg, has been out and about binkying, poops seem perfectly OK.

I however am starting to get paranoid  Hmmm This morning she refused the pellets I offered her which panicked me but then when I went by again she was eating out of the bowl. I don't know whether she is wary of me now because of vets visits/medication or whether she is feeling out of sorts. She positively cringes when I stroke her  Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad With the weather being so vile it is hard to just sit ane spend time with the her in an attempt to get her to trust me more.

I can't quite shake off the feeling that maybe something is not quite right even though she seems happy enough when out and about with Gabe. Maybe she is just fed up with the weather/time of year.

If anything changes I will of course take her back to the vets.

It could be that she is fed up - charlie certainly is a sulky monkey - and i have noticed that both him and annabelle are not so quick to the food bowl as they normally would be.

I suspect she knows how bad it makes you feel when she cringes! I also have this with Charlie, every time he sees me im grabbing him to put meds down him, so he never trusts me....it makes me really sad - but I know that he is still here and able to have a good life, even if he is a little scared of me.

If she has been to the vet a bit, then she might be suspicious of you when you stop to give her any attention and start to touch her.

Sasha knows that when she sees a towel that it is bad news and she will start to stamp her little feet. I have to hide it behind my back now as she is off if she sees it. Laughing Laughing
