digging and roots

I too have invested in a runaround system for Patch and Daisy as a treat after the horrendous winter they have had. They love it and have now started tunneling under our lawn.

They come across roots and bite them to get them out of the way but I am worried that the roots could be toxic, are there many toxic roots I should worry about? I don't want to stop them from digging because they love it so much!   

I really don't know..... Are they eating them do you think or just biting through them?

Has there been any insecticides or fertilizers used in that area? I don't think buns stop and munch much whilest tunneling. They have a need for speed!

hmmm I think they are biting through them. There shouldn't be any insecticides or chemicals and Ive pulled the roots out just to make sure. They would have to go another foot to get them - and if they did this they would escape!

I have additional mesh on order to foil their escape plans!

How to you work that they can digg under the tunnel of the system. We are intrigued to know?

Hm - not sure if roots are potentially toxic. But having seen Gabe and Spring in action when tunnelling I agree with Holly. They are not interested in eating, their aim is to shift as much soil as quickly as possible.

Isn't there a theory that rabbits chew through cables in the home because they remind them of roots in burrows, and they instinctively want to remove then? So it would be pretty natural behaviour for them to chew through the roots? I'm pretty sure I haven't made that up!

I guess it could depend on what kind of tree said roots belong to though?!

I love to watch the tunneling. once upon a time there was a YouTube vid called Howard's Big Dig that was long and showed a beautiful bun DIG all to one of the songs from the movie Willow. The copyright police made them remove it. It was so special I watched it any time I needed cheering up. There is still part of it viewable at: Howard's Big Dig

It is great to watch them, I would be terrified if it got to be as deep as Howard's tunnel. I would worry it might collapse and trap them

Do you know what roots they are at all ? as I know wild and domestic rabbits like to nibble on roots .
