Does length matter?
Henry loves Alfalfa Oat, Wheat and Barley hay, and he adores the really long stalks. He sits there spaghetti-ing it down with a dreamy look in his eyes. But, alas, really long stalks can be pretty few and far between and if it's six inches or shorter then he ignores it.
Does anyone else find the shorter lengths of hay a problem? If so, how do you get your buns to eat it? I've got bags of short stalks Henners won't entertain and it's darned expensive.

Their timothy hay is the same. Molly and Junior won't entertain the little bits either :-/

Re: Does length matter?
So, what do we do? Do you think there's a chance that there could be a market for Retro straw stuffed mattresses like they had in the old days?
Recouping some of the cash spent on rejected hay would be great.

I only bought it because they love camomille. It was worth a try and failed. Won't by it again.

Re: Does length matter?
Me thinks our buns are just a little spoiled, mine included, l buy 5 differant hays & throw out 95 % of it.
I have enough toys to start a bunny day care cause Mr. Fussy doesn't like them, but do I stop, everytime I see a new toy, I get all excited & can't wait to get home, then dashed again, he's more work than all 3 of my kids
Good luck with the bed

Willow and Mo also prefer the long stalks and as a result, I am forever throwing masses of hay out, too

Re: Does length matter?
Nice to know I'm not alone in this.
But it beggars the question: "Why do we let them get away with it?"
You'd think Henry, a poor rescued bun, would appreciate everything I give him. He is a foodie but this hay thing is getting ridiculous. What's wrong with the short stuff?

Holly is completely spoilt too hun although she is quite good at what she will eat. I wish I could suggest something that would help.

Re: Does length matter?
I try to recycle the left overs from the feeding hay. Mine get theirs served in a wicker basket.
Every time I clear their litter tray out I take the left over and top the litter tray with it as well as the digging box and their bed.
Works to some extend.

Re: Does length matter?
I tried putting Henners hay in a basket. Only once though. He picked it up and hopped off into the sitting room shedding hay all along the route. Now it stays at one end of his litter tray which is inside his crate. A few stalks wander out but I find hovering the carpet in the crate easier than doing the whole of the dining room and sitting room every day.
He's decided of late that he wants to be a pro weight lifter and throws his dishes around, thankfully he has left his drink dish alone, so far.
