While looking for a bigger cage for Soundwave noticed a lot of customer pictures the base of the pen hasn't got any sawdust or hay, and I was wondering if there was a benefit to this or if it was just a personal preference??

Megazorb is great for litter tray and i used to just put newspaper everywhere else and lots of hay for them to munch on.

Sawdust isn't recommended for bunnies because it can cause respiratory issues as it is quite dusty. Also, if you have a bunny with long hair, such as a lionhead, bits of the wood shavings can be tangled in their very fine fur and cause problems and knots.

You are much better to bed with either hay or megazorb. Smile

I agree with the ladies Smile I wouldn't use sawdust either.

For litter trays I use Back 2 Nature. They have vet bed in their pen to get comfy on.

I would never use sawdust/wood shavings. They are bad for rabbit respiratory systems, get into their eyes and, as Nickie said, it can create havoc with certain types of coat; plus it's messy.
I use megazorb on a sheet of newspaper to line Henry's litter tray; he's uncaged and free roaming but in an indoor cage I would perhaps use carpet off cut with a megazorb in a litter tray; in a hutch megazorb in the day area (with hay in a tray/net for eating) and megazorb with hay in the sleeping room.
Saw dust/shavings for rabbits (and guinea pigs) is very out dated now.

Hi There

Welcome to HH :-)

Does your little one use a litter tray?

If so I would use megazorb with a layer of hay on top for the litter tray, and then just newspapers/a blanket everywhere else? Mine all use a litter tray so The only area with "bedding" in it is the litter tray, they have a hay rack for their hay and a good layer in the litter tray too... (they like to eat while they do their business. Mine are free range bunnies and they all use a tray quite happily so I dont need to worry about having anything on the floor :-)

I use back to nature too. On newspaper and then layered with straw and hay. Plenty. This is in all,the litter trays, each warren has got two of them and one in the communal area, previously known as the lounge.

Holly has two large boxers, one in the bedroom and one in the sitting room.  I use just hay which is changed every morning.

I'm convinced they do the hay spreading on purpose. Daisy loves nothing more than waiting until after I've hoovered and then getting it as far from the hay box as possible!

Love to see them operating the old conveyor belt .... hay in, poop out! They look so happy and Henry always chatters while he chomps.... he really appreciates the 'heap for a heap' system!

Ah the doe and the buck thing.... I've always found does are generally more on the ball in just about everything. Bucks seem to like the relaxed life, sometimes verging on indolence where one or two of my boys were concerned. The does were always busy even when it came to eating ... guess they had things to do, places to be.
