Re: Bedding for spayed buns
I would keep her lovely and warm whilst shes recovering but maybe move her somewhere cooler before she goes outside again.Fraggle wrote:Did I say Thursday, I meant Tuesday, which is tomorrow. She has at least come back into her home in the barn, so she is shut in now for the night. I am not looking forward to this at all. Have a small cage ready to bring in tomorrow night.
One more question, should I put her in one of the bedrooms which are not too hot as our living room, kitchen and garden room are all heated by the log burner and I dont want her to get used to too much heat.

Re: Bedding for spayed buns
Well she is back home and they say all is well. She has eaten a bit apparently. I have put her in a bedroom where it is quiet. should I keep the light on or turn it off. Do rabbits eat in the dark? I have to take her back on Friday unless she doesnt eat and poo.
She only grunted at them once!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Bedding for spayed buns
Quiet and not doing much, not eating that I can see either. But then so many things are strange, paper bedding instead of hay, small hutch instead of big run, no guinea pigs next door, hopefully she will perk up. Its difficult to know whether to keep her quiet in the bedroom or put her in the annex to the living room where there is a bit more noise, ie the tele in the next room.

Re: Bedding for spayed buns
She will be a bit quiet for a while don't worry, has she gone to the toilet at all? and has she drunk anything?
I had to put Lunas water in a bowl as she didn't want to drink out of a bottle when she was spayed, I think it was easier for her to have the bowl. We had a few problems with eating too but I gave her lots of raisins and silly treats to get her going and eventually we got there.
A quiet place is fine I think , just as long as you can keep an eye on her every so often. She is probably just a bit disorientated and uncomfortable

Re: Bedding for spayed buns
I think you have hit the nail on the head! That's just how she is feeling I think. I had put a small bowl of water in there with some celery and her usual food. I dont think she has gone to the toilet but I dont want to move her around too much. I can try some raisins.
I have bought her a corn on the cob rabbit treat thingie, but I dont think she is in the mood at the moment. She didnt have the operation until 2 pm ish so maybe its still early.

Re: Bedding for spayed buns
I wouldn't give her the corn of the cob thing as I don't think they are very good for rabbits.
She will be quiet just now as she will be recovering from the GA and all the stress. Leave her in peace and in the warm and she will be better before you know it. Keep an eye for her peeing and pooing. You can try her with her favourite foods. One thing you can do if push food in her face to see if she will snatch at it. Sometimes they will then eat the bit they have grabbed and go on and eat the rest too.
I would leave her wound. I tried to check my does, but they just didn't want touched so I left them.

Re: Bedding for spayed buns
Hi, loads of wee and a few poos. She is pretty fed up with her confined quarters, have put some fresh grass in as she usually eats loads of that outside everyday. I have moved her to a slightly cooler room as the one she was in is in bright sun and will get too warm.
I have removed the corn on the cob although I think it was meant just as a treat as I know it has sugar in it, so too much would not be good. Its been baked hard and you clip it it to the wire, the guineas have it now!!
Her wound looks fine, so am beginning to relax now.
I got into bed last night and suddenly thought of the shredded paper and paper cuts, as it wasnt all newspaper. I had to get up and remove it so she was just left on sheets of newspaper. I think that is probably easier to change too. The only trouble is that she will be sitting on wet paper during the night, so maybe I had better go and buy some shredded paper specially for pets from the pet shop.
She is now eating hay and grass and the odd dandelion, she seems to want me to sit with her while she eats! Maybe I will try a towel tonight which would hopefully soak up the wee better than newspaper.

Re: Bedding for spayed buns
So glad she is doing okay.
How lovely that she wants to spend time with you that is really lovely.
Bless her. a towel sounds like a great idea. I wouldnt worry about special paper she will be fine with the normal stuff hun.
I think that corn is really bad for their digestion so you did the right thing removing it. I give daisy fresh herbs as his treats and he absolutely LOVES them.

Re: Bedding for spayed buns
Do you think I could put her out in a bigger hutch in a large brick outhouse where her run is. I wont put her in the run as too much space but the hutch is much bigger than the one she has indoors. I think she needs to be able to hop about a little bit.
She seems fine and I could bring her back inside the house in the small hutch for the night. When can they have hay for bedding again? She is due for a check up tomorrow morning. Thank you all for holding my hand during this fraught time!!

Re: Bedding for spayed buns
I gave mine a towel to lie on when they were done and it is a really worrying time so I know what you are going through.
It sounds like everything is going well and hopefully she can go back outside soon. Let us know how she gets on with her check up.

Let us know how her check up goes.
I think she would be fine to go back outside if they are happy with her and she is eating and pooing properly again. Bless her.
I bet she will miss you though.

Re: Bedding for spayed buns
She was checked yesterday afternoon and all was well. She is back out in her run in the barn next to her guinea pig friends. I have not opened her hole into the outside area just yet, as it is a very large space and she usually does her derby winner impersonation! I think I had better leave that for a few days.
She still grumps a bit but didnt lunge at me when I picked her up, and seems to be generally calmer. Although I know that its far too soon for any major change. Actually I think she is generally a very friendly bun as she always comes over to see me.
Thanks again for your support

Re: Bedding for spayed buns
Leonora seems to be back to normal, In fact, I hardly noticed any difference in her, I think the vet did a very good job.
She is happily back in the run in the barn next to the guineas. How long should I leave it before she is allowed out to play in the outside area? Its only four days since her op (can't believe that, it seems ages!!) There are no external stitches to remove, just internal.
