Laura, I blame you...
I am going to get fat. I baked some cupcakes this afternoon
Thought you might like to see em. Like a good little HH geek I took photos of the process
Plain cupcakes. I overloaded them a bit so had to trim them down later
Iced plain cakes - icing was icing sugar, milk chocolate, butter and cream... boy are we gonna get fat!
The next lot I used rose flavouring as well as vanilla. Not sure how they will taste but it certainly smelt very rosey
4 different cakey colours (purple, yellow, pink and plain. The chocolate in the background is icing!)
Nom nom psychadelic cakeys!
Psychadelic bakey cakeys
Violet, Fuschia, Baby pink, orange, apple green and ruby icings
All done
I have had so many little tastes of icing today that I'm not at all hungry but Mr B is. I hope somehow that our empty refrigerator suddenly produces a nice fat stew...

Re: Laura, I blame you...
god only knows!
They were pretty darn funky though. Mr B has had one chocolate one but I am so full from eating dinner when I wasn't hungry that I couldn't stomach one

wowwwweeeee!!! i saw these on Facebook! i seem to be causing a baking revolution!
i love the bakey cakeyness! love those colourful ones! i saw some on flickr and they were really gross looking, but those are subtle and yummers!
in the US they make these types of cakes - the batter is red, white and blue - and the bake them in jars and send them to troops! how cute is that?

some of 'em!
what struck me when I was over there was how much they value their servicemen and are grateful for them serving their country, etc. over here it's totally different, we HATE our servicemen, no-one gives two sh*ts about them and if one was to walk down the street in uniform they get tons of abuse. they get called murders and all sorts. when they return form duties in other countries, no-one welcomes them, no-one thanks them. it's so sad.

That definitely is something I like about America. Even if people don't agree politically with whatever war we happen to be in at the moment (which most people don't) we still respect the people who risk their lives for our country. I've been on airline flights and in restaurants where people have applauded servicemen in uniform and it kinda gets me all choked up
Anyhoo, sorry for taking over your thread Helen!!

Re: Laura, I blame you...
I want a cake in a jar! Does this mean I have to change gender and join the services?
BTW: How do you get them out of the jar to eat or do you just go in with a spoon?

Re: Laura, I blame you...
Laura don't even get me started on how troops are treated in the UK. It makes my blood boil (shocker there) and I don't want to start or I'd never stop (plus there;s no-one around at this time of the morning to argue with LOL)
Boblets, the recipe was just one I found online, I'm sure Laura has many better ones *taps foot impatiently* but in the mean time here it is:
Oven to 180C (Gas Mark 4, 350F)
Combine flour, sugar, baking powder and salt.
Add butter, milk and vanilla and mix well
Add egg and mix well.
Spoon into liners until 1/2-2/3 full (this was my fundamental error )
Cook 20-25 mins or until a toothpick comes out clean
I made the plain ones just like this, the second lot I added 1/2 tsp of rose water and split it into 4 bowls - adding food colouring.
The icing was:
Blend until smooth, colour in crazy shades and apply.
Chocolate icing was (approximately as I made this one up):
1/4-1/3 fill a pan with boiling water and put the mixing bowl on top (NOT IF PLASTIC!!! ) - melth down the chocolate and butter, adding cream later and blend.
Allow to cool for a bit then slather on
be warned though, the only reason I used most of the choc icing was because I had to trim my cakes down so much - that makes tonnes, you would be best to halve the ingredients methinks.
I actually haven't eaten any of my cakes yet.

- 1/3 cup sugar
- 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/4 cup butter (melted)
- 1/2 tsp vanilla essence
- 1 large egg

- 60 cream cheese/mascarpone
- 125g icing sugar
- 50g melted butter
- 1/4 tsp vanilla essence
Blend until smooth, colour in crazy shades and apply.

Re: Laura, I blame you...
well, i was a bit inspired by the colourful ones and had a go! they are cooling but don't look anywhere near as pretty as yours uniced. i wonder if it's to do with the ingredients. i don't melt the butter and use SR flour and baking soda. either way, yours look better! cow!

Re: Laura, I blame you...
LOl I had some kickass colourings - really strong ones, maybe that was it? Honestly, it's beginners luck. The butter was listed as 'shortening' and I actually had to go look up what that meant.
I want to do moooore. please scan in some recipes laura
