SNIFFER BUNS!
It's nearly 11yrs since I lost my beloved Clawed. She was the rabbit who led me into the warren so-to-speak. I learned so much from her, watching her everyday actions was a mind blowing education and one thing she did really surprised me.
Clawed became a house rabbit for the final 2yrs of her life and having moved indoors she insisted on being a part of all the doings of myself and Misty, my border collie. This included going on twice daily walks in the wood. On these walks I noticed she would often pause to dig... just normal rabbit behavior I thought, until I noticed she was digging things up and eating them. Not tasty roots, not in the wood. I waited my chance and grabbed her treasure before she could devour it. It was a peanut! One of the many a squirrel had pinched from the bird table during the winter and buried "for later".
Clawed dug up numerous peanuts.
She must have smelt them. They had been buried for two or three months, the only way she could have known they were there was because she smelt them.
This wasn't like digging up juicy grass roots where there was an above ground marker. There was nothing to indicate the nuts were there.
I know rabbits have extraordinary scenting abilities and can read scents on the wind from great distances but I never knew they could detect a buried scent like that. She was my wonderful grey Truffle Hound! Well kinda................

Re: SNIFFER BUNS!
She should be pt to work
Buns have 9000 odour receptors in their noses, we have 2000 - so I guess they are pretty good at sniffing

Re: SNIFFER BUNS!
Clawed was 8 when she took to going on walks with Misty and me. She just lead the way! She never ran off but she loved to play "Get me out from under this Holly bush!" She was a remarkable rabbit. She was boss of all she surveyed. Misty loved her though she never argued with her... whatever Clawed wanted, Clawed got. I remember one winters evening poor Misty lay on the hearth rug shaking like a leaf while Clawed bit the whiskers off one side of her muzzle. She also did unmentionable things to the poor collies lovely bushy tail!
