Lizzie you have to be really careful about putting buns on their backs. They often appear to doze off but this is known as trancing and they generally find it really stressful. And when they come out of their 'trance' they can come to with a real shock twist to get away and damage their spine. Unfortunately when you have to see to the buns personal care on your own you can have no option, but it is something you should only do if you really have to and not leave them there too long.

Yea i realise that which is why i don't like to try it too much because he always twists to escape, and as he is so small, he is really hard to keep hold of, it would just make clipping his nails much easier!! Thankfully one of the vet nurses at my vets is my friends wife, so she comes round and holds him while i cut!! (because my bf is useless at holding him!!!)

I thought trancing was when they were drifting off to sleep or something, I didnt have ginge like that for long but star lay there for ages sleeping.

It is thought to be the play dead prey animal reaction. You need to handle the buns in as safe a way as possible for nail clipping so if that is the best option for you then it is a necessary evil but it is not something that is advisable all the time.
