deaf??
How can you tell if a bun is deaf???
I think Ginge is, when I walk up behind him he never moves like the others do, they usualy spring round to see who is there etc.

Re: deaf??
I couldn't tell you mine act like they are deaf all the time. The only reason I know they aren't is because they come running when I shake the Fenugreek Crunchie jar

Re: deaf??
Mine too. Anything for a fenugreek crunchie!
The click test is a good one. Click to either side of them when relaxed and see if there is any reaction. Stroke around the head area first to get him used to you hands being there.

Re: deaf??
Fenugreek is a spice often used in indian cooking. Rosewood (boredom breakers) make fenugreek crunchie treats and buns just go mad for them. I break mine down into smaller pieces so they last longer.

Re: deaf??
If you make a sharp loud noise and she doesn't seem to hear you then she could be deaf. Have you checked in her ears to see if she has ear mites at all because if she has and they are left untreated they can lead to infections and head tilt.

Re: deaf??
one of my bunnies, Zero, is blind in one eye and he spooks even if you come up behind him or are on his 'good side'. I think it is a lot easier to tell if a bunny is blind rather than deaf.
I think if he is behaving differently to the others it is possibly an indicator, Zero's whole behaviour has changed since he became blind - his blindness is caused by a hereditary cataract that has slowly spread across his eye - and he is so cautious now compared to the others.
I also think as others have said if he isn't responding to loud noises there's a good chance he is. I had a deaf bunny stay here for bonding and he was a lot like how you've described Ginge, you could walk up behind him and he wouldn't even flinch. I would take to the vets for an ear mites check though and the vet will probably have some tests they can use for deafness

Re: deaf??
I had him there the other day with fredia when I first got them just to get them checked and the vet didnt mention anything. x
Re: deaf??
I guess it wouldn't be immediately obvious to your vet as they don't really see their natural behaviour and they will be very aware that pets behave totally different when at the vets!
I pointed out Zero's cataract to the vet when it was first forming - it was very small and we had to hold him up to certain lights to see it - and the vet diagnosed it straight away. Don't be afraid to talk to your vet about the behaviours you see at home and remember that sometimes things seem really obvious to you because you see them every day.
