I can get barley straw from my local QD. Do you have a QD store Sooz?
No I don't, I usually get it in Wilkinsons but has been out of stock for over 2 weeks now.

Re: Bedding?
I used to use woodshavings but it played havoc with my asthma and it made Tigger sneeze like anything.
Now they're both litter trained I have two toilets which have a recycled paper pellet in them (back-2-nature) and hay in their bed.
I don't use anything else in their hutch or shed, I used to line it with newspaper but that would just get pulled into one corner and ripped up. I've been keeping an eye on their hocks and they seem perfectly fine hopping around on the shed floor etc.

Re: Bedding?
Lil Loll doesn't have a cage... he's a free roaming houserabbit. He has a litter tray beside the fire in the sitting room. That is lined with newspaper, with half its length covered in megazorb and the other has a mixture of hays... meadow hay and fresh forage.
He as several rugs in various dozing spots, these are fluffy bath mats and vet fleeces. He also has his new soft dog bed. He sometimes kips in my armchair and in the cold weather I leave a fleece on the hearth and he is invariably sound asleep on that when I get up in the mornings... oh, and he snores!

THis is true for softwoods such as pine and cedar.
Aspen is safe.
I myself use aspen in the litter tray because it is what I use for my hamsters.

Yeah, of course, but in the majority of cases woodshavings are pine and cedar, so general care advice is to avoid them.

When I was in my old house with a mutlifuel burner in the middle of winter I used to Pack the dirty megazorb in on top of the coal and it would help to keep the fire going really well all night. In the morning I would just riddle the fire a bit then pile on a bit more coal and it would be fine for the day. Useful stuff megazorb.

Re: Bedding?
Cheryl... I have open fires and burn extra heat (one of those smokeless cobbles). It keeps in very well over night, never thought of burning the used megazorb... does it smell when it's burning?
Oh, in case anyone is worried: I put a good guard round the fire before setting up lil Loll's bed! He might be a right lil sh*t but I do love him really!

Velvet.Tears wrote:My lot having to work for their food oh gawd, they'd starve they are so highly strung!
Haha! Believe me they wouldn't, rabbits are so food orientated. I got rid of food bowl end of last year and just started sprinkling their pellets around for them to find themselves...it keeps them entertained for a good 15 minutes and makes them move about. I think I used to have similar cages to what you do, so there's probably not a lot of room to do that so the toilet roll idea is brilliant . Whenever mine hear a plastic bag rustle they are on it...think I am getting them their food!! Give it a go Also for bedding, I agree with everyone else..newspaper to line the cage and then a litter tray with litter in...I know you have a lot of rabbits..so if you can order megazorb online doo it..so cheap and lasts ages. Much better than any litter we've used.

Holly has used it too. And the bunnies are so happy with the new bedding. I saw Alaska & Ryleigh flopped out on the hay and Rudy is binkying. The others are chomping their hay

I'm not sure currently as I may have to be down south at that time due to some family illness, hopefully I'll know either way soon.

Re: Bedding?
It depends how much money I have and whats available at the time. I only use "tradidional" bedding in the litter trays. They have fleece/vet bed to snuggle up on if they want to.
My favourite is Megazorb. I also use Sophisticat (beauticat), which is a wood based cat litter. I also have a couple of bags of dust extracted, soft cut hay. Id use anything but saw dust and pine shavings unless it was something like bedmax or nedzbeds. xx

Re: Bedding?
I think you megazorb fans may change your minds... The absorbancy of this stuff is qhite amazing, you can go around 10 days without changing it, and there's barely any odour
Re: Bedding?
Well that would certainly win me over for the pigs. It depends on price as well though. Megazorb can contain the main area of the pig hutch for a week and keep them warm and dry in the depths of winter and it only costs about £10 per bag delivered to my door. It's hard to beat.
