Re: vaccine help?
In my opinion yes, a house rabbit can still get VHD because it is impossible to keep all insect vectors expelled from the house.
The virus can also survive for several month without a host, so can be passed on in infected bedding, second hand hutches, through clothing and on shoes, etc. etc.

Re: vaccine help?
Yes she does need her VHD vaccine, because it can be brought into the house on your shoes or clothing, as well as other ways. She also needs her Myxomatosis vaccine if she's not already had it.
In addition, I would recommend that you get her spayed. Unspayed rabbits are very much at risk from cancer.

Re: vaccine help?
Absolutely yes! My Buttons is a house bun with no access to outside but I still got him done as virus' like mxyi and VHD can still be carried in on your shoes, with flies etc! They are both such horrible diseases and I would never forgive myself if my bunny got ill with these because I hadn't vaccinated him!

Re: vaccine help?
Aww thanks! Ironically I never wanted a black rabbit, I had my heart set on a brown one that I could call flapjacks!! But when I saw buttons my heart just melted!! I couldn't imagine life without him now!! Suddenly lots of people have black rabbits lately!

Re: vaccine help?
Make sure your vet doesn't give them both (myxi & VHD) at the same time. There should be a minimum 2 week gap between the two. Given the time of year I would suggest getting the Myxomatosis done first.

Re: vaccine help?
ive never had a bunny before so really its all new to me and thought this was best place for help on the issue.
i found it very odd that a vet who claims to work with alot of rabbits couldnt answer a simple yes or no question regarding a vaccine, he stuttered stammered and finally said it was my choice as soon as i had left the vet i looked for somewhere else x

Re: vaccine help?
Good for you! Rabbits can be tricky little creatures so finding a good vet who really knows about them early on is really important.
Re: vaccine help?
i was so shocked at his reaction to quite a simple question, as friends had said no u dont need that one as its a house rabbit etc,x

Re: vaccine help?
The next thing to check is which vaccine they use for the VHD jab.

When you ring to book your appointment, you are quite within your rights to request a different vaccine rather than Cylap. My vet ordered in Anivac for me and charged me the same as if it was Cylap.

Very good point! My vets ordered in anivac for me too and it was the same price as cylap, but without the nasty side affects!
