New Hutch in the making
Mike is building a hutch for our local Garden Centre to sell as they asked Mike if he could make one to see if it sells. So Mike is in the process of building one. It's 6ft x 2ft and 2ft high and it will have a sleeping compartment with a shelf so the bunny can jump onto the top of the sleeping compartment, this one like I said is for the Garden centre but if you had a choice would you rather have a sleeping compartment and no shelf, or sleeping compartment and shelf in a hutch.
I couldn't stand anywhere in Mike's workshop that I could get the whole hutch in so this is the best I can do at the moment.

I think I would put a shelf in the sleeping compartment if that makes sense. I seem to remember reading something about buns liking shelves in general.

No I mean above the sleeping compartment, so they can like jump on to the sleeping compartment or just a sleeping compartment. It's difficult to explain really. We don't put shelves in sleeping compartments as there is usually not enough room so we make them so that the bunny can jump on top of it.

Re: New Hutch in the making
That's what the Hu-parents are planning to do in the new shed (eventually ). The sleeping compartment will be half-height as there's no need for it to be periscope height, and the top will be a shelf to get up onto.Tuckerbunnies wrote:No I mean above the sleeping compartment, so they can like jump on to the sleeping compartment or just a sleeping compartment. The hutch looks fab so far, when it is done you must let us know what you'd have to sell them for to make a reasonable profit

He said he will not make much profit at all on them, this one he said will have to be about £200 as that just about covers the wood. I don't think they will sell at that price so I don't know what he will do next.

Re: New Hutch in the making
I think that's the problem, people are reluctant to pay good money for something that would last years when they can get cheaper elsewhere, and never mind if it falls apart in a year or two

Re: New Hutch in the making
It's funny how reading threads can make you see the blindingly obvious. I suddenly realised why we a re seeing more plastic bases in hutches as well as those hutches with more that one wired side.

i agree, the cage that hubbie did, that cost about £600-800 i think and thats not with labour cost too,no one would go in to a shop and pay that, infact i wouldnt go in to a shop and pay that for a hutch

That looks nice! Good quality of wood too. Some people still pay for quality.

The poor workshop was flooded last time we looked, so God knows now if and when he will finish the hutch

Re: New Hutch in the making
I dont think you need to spend big bucks on a hutch/cage etc. I think its more how you can add extra strength and warmth, line it with insulation, etc, we bought play huts costing about £99 - £125 retail for charlie and smokey, then inside lined them adding a shelf to add more floor space so they can binky and be able to stretch out, still to finish smokeys tho his is half done, fully lined just not got the shelf yet. I did however buy a hutch for Rosie as I was desperate to get them both out the small cramped cages didnt have time to buy another play hut and fix it in same way so got the dear pets at home 2 level hutch. Once they are all spayed and save to be bonded (if they bond fingers crossed) all 3 huts will be joined together with tubes and runs offering them a huge amount of space.

Re: New Hutch in the making
Our 1st rabbit went through 3 hutches, 1 from argos (heap of bleep) mid range one from pets at home, bit better but still didnt keep her warm and dry through winter, so bin it went too, in the end got one built for her, but had to give her up she was far to aggressive, (lack of really understanding bunnys needs on my part it was 10 years ago) I know better now.

What a clever idea! They will be living more like their
wildie cousins with tunnels and separate living spaces
if they want. Or just doing the Bunny 500 round and
round with places for pit stops and a nom or two!

I am just hoping all 3 bond, even if the young ones bond, I will build charlie his very own run beside the other 2s huts/run.
