Neglected bunnies :(
Whilst walking the rescue dogs today, we received a phone call from a woman who wanted to rehome her rabbits because one of them had fly strike. She blamed her children for the state the rabbits were in and informed us we could not have their hutch as it was filthy. We said we would take the rabbits, and asked her to drop them to our vets immediately so they could receive treatment. The previous owner was local to us, but she took an hour to get to the vets as she wanted a cuppa and sit down after work (!!!)
The rabbits have now seen our vet. The male had the maggots and eggs removed and he has severe urine burns from living in filth. The female has bad teeth which have not been treated.

Re: Neglected bunnies :(
This breaks my heart. How can someone let an animal suffer because the kids can't be bothered. Far too common though. I hope the buns find a loving home x

Re: Neglected bunnies :(
Oh the poor things Whatever she may say, it is ultimately HER responsibility to take care of the buns, and make sure the kids are doing what needs to be done. I wish parents would learn that many kids will get bored of animals, and that animal ownership isn't all about fluffy cuddles.
I'm glad they are now away from that awful situation and will receive the care they need and deserve.

Hopefully he will pull through. He is coming home this afternoon with his girlfriend where he will receive round the clock care. Sleep is over-rated anyway
Woman simply didn't care. Not her problem anymore.

Re: Neglected bunnies :(
I sometimes wish we could lock people up in cages and leave them there in their own muck and see how they like it. Sometimes I think it would do them good.
Re: Neglected bunnies :(

I think it's great for kids to have pets, however the pet should never be the child's responsibility. It is down to the adult to oversee everything and ensure the animal is well cared for. Should the child start to lose interest, the adult should make a huge effort to engage the kid with the pet and show them how fantastic animals are.
The children shouldn't be blamed - I have no idea how old they were, but its not down to them, its down to the mother.
After all, what is she teaching them? Animals can be given up if you are bored and you don't have to clean them out of you can't be bothered?

Re: Neglected bunnies :(
If people say to me they are thinking of getting their child or children a pet rabbit I always say 'No' buy them a book on looking after rabbit's and make sure they read it, make them read it aloud and if they still want one then go ahead, I can guarantee they end up buying a hamster.
I personally don't think rabbits are ideal for children under a certain age but that's my opinion.
I'm just glad these poor bunnies are now in a place where they are safe and will get the care they deserve, I only hope that lady has learned something but I doubt it
To think she had a sit down and a cup of tea and a break before she sought help for these rabbits....disgust's me!!

No. He would have to be surrendered to the RSPCA and small animals cases don't make it to court.

Ewwww how horrible, the poor wee guys, hate hearing about maggots & eggs, its nothing to do with children, its a FAMILY pet, everyone is responsible for its care and wellbeing, if the kids arent doing it right its down to the parents to teach them properly.

Re: Neglected bunnies :(
My kids are actually really great, they all take turns with the rabbits & others, my oldest goes put daily and spot cleans which he wasnt asked to do he just gets a bag, dustpan & brush off he goes, emergies hour later all happy hes helped out, he takes a while talking to them for some time as he cleans there houses and changes there food dishes, my daughter feeds the cat well her cat that shes claimed, middle son walks one if the dogs once a day(they get more walks he just takes a turn) daughter walks the other. None o them are made to do it, their all taught to respect and take care of animals.

Re: Neglected bunnies :(
It is really disgusting the way some people behave. And then to blame it on your CHILDREN? Child being the key word... Everyone knows that the novelty will wear off and then the animal becomes a chore to be neglected and forgotten about. It was HER responsibility to continue their care if this was to happen. Some people make me sick.
Come on little Theo, there are better times ahead. Sending lots of healing vibes to the little guy and hoping he makes it

Re: Neglected bunnies :(
Theo is the tan one, Rosie is his partner.
Rosie loves her Theo.
Mods - is it OK to link to the other photos? I don't want to upset anyone on here with them as they are graphic and not nice to look at.
For those who want to see Theo's large wound, you can see it here;

Thank you. We will do everything we can to get him through this, but as I'm sure you know rabbits are very prone to shock and he isn't out the danger zone yet.
