Anyone who thinks buns are cheap is mad.........
They are simply insane.
2 dental buns and one that will only eat hay at £7.50 per 425g.
Good job we love the bones of them ay..........
Wouldnt it be great if we could attach a list of real costs to the front of any bunnies being sold to make people really aware what it costs to care for them properly.

You are so right. They probably cost as much as having a dog, I've no idea why people seem to think they are cheap and easy pets!

Re: Anyone who thinks buns are cheap is mad.........
I agree with you there Katie! I marvel at the care and strongly set standards for your bunnies there in the UK. For the most part here they are just livestock. I've tried to find a bunny savvy vet to do Thumper's neuter but am having difficulty. The one 'small exotic specialist' vet that had been recommended charged 5 times as much as others yet on their list of 27 animals treated they didn't even mention rabbits. The person I spoke with said proudly that they had done 3 or 4 this YEAR. I think I will go to the vet that says she isn't an expert but does 4 to 5 a week and has well satisfied Bunny Parents.
Bunnies are expensive to care for and the damage they do to your property can be steep. I guess we all live with chewed baseboards and door frames, but they can really do a number on drywall, furniture, linens and clothing. Those are things that must be fixed.
To be properly cared for they need at least as much attention as a dog or cat. Most find the time demand to be too great and they end up with a sad, destructive bunny that they then ignore/confine even more.
They require a great investment of time and money....but they are so very worth every second and penny!

Re: Anyone who thinks buns are cheap is mad.........
Funnily enough, Mum and I worked it out the other day and Willow costs me as much and sometimes more (if she's been for a health check, booster etc) each month as one of our dogs - and that's on the months she's not showered with toys and treats - when you add on those she costs MORE.
I think bunnies are easily comparable to a dog. They need to be neutered and vaccinated, and treatments and vets bills can easily run up just as high as a dog.
But they are definitely worth it when they're razzing around the place or snuggling and being cute.

I can contribute to this thread!!
Hay tunnels at £10 a go. Each one last them a maximum of 6 days.
And they eat my house if they don't have one

Re: Anyone who thinks buns are cheap is mad.........
High maintenance lot aren't they, but we wouldn't have them any other way!
When I always say to people (especially recently since Tigger and Jeeves have been ill) that they are incredibly expensive, I don't think they quite take it in an believe me. They see it more as me babying them and giving them more than what they need which is annoying.
If only there was a way!

Completely agree. Stacy was a very expensive bun to keep but unfortunately it still wasn't enough to keep her going and Paris too.

Re: Anyone who thinks buns are cheap is mad.........
Well the perception is that you just need to chuck a handful of cheap bunny muesli into a tiny hutch once a day and all is well, isn't it? If that's how you "care" for a bunny then yes they are cheap.
We know different, and hopefully the message will reach the masses before long.

I too was shocked at what you have to fork out for your hay.
I'm lucky also in that I pay £1.50 per bag and it is actually really good stuff. It is from a farm but is hardly dusty and smells lovely. Lots of variety too - some weeks we get nice thick and stalky hay (Willow's fave) and other times lots of green and flowery/leafy stuff. I'd say there's about a slice and a half of a bale in each bag.

My outside pair are fine but daisy ( who is severely dental) will only eat the oxbow organic that only comes in teeny bags
He is really funny about eating - he just isn't bothered so it's amazing he eats it at all. I wish he would eat the normal stuff tho. Good job I love him!
