Boo has been to the vets 03 sept
Boo's head is tilting to his right, his right ear is flat down and his right eye is gooey and shut. He is quieter than normal but eating and has removed himself from the girls. Do I need to be worried here? I feel worried, very worried.

Don't think so, when he was neutered they checked his teeth and gave him the all clear for his teeth. Am getting the indoor cage out the attic and bringing him indoors to observe him. I hope it's just an eye infection and not something more serious. The tilting head is worrying me.

Re: Boo has been to the vets 03 sept
I don't want to sound overly panicky but I would be on the phone to the vet now and asking for some panacur to get into him NOW! If it isn't e.c. it will not hurt if it is it could not only help Boo but also prevent the infection spreading. You are ultimately going to need to treat all 7 rabbits. I know I promote it a lot but I will do it again. The on the wonk forum is really helpful for people with buns with e.c. and related conditions.

I'm thinking ear infection but agree that getting some Panacur into him until he can be looked at by a competent vet is a good move, just in case...

Re: Boo has been to the vets 03 sept
Why is his eye glued shut if it is his ear? I have brought him inside for the night> He has scoffed his pellets and is just sat there like he is waiting for me to do something He doesn't seem to suffering with balance. I registered on On the Wonk and looked at the info on symptoms, I don't feel he has all the symptoms, so maybe just an inner ear infection? It looks ok from the outside.

Re: Boo has been to the vets 03 sept
ear infections can block the tear ducts i believe but don't quote me,
try wiping his eye with a little warm water on cotton wool it used to work for me as a child it may unstick his eye.

Re: Boo has been to the vets 03 sept
Bless Boo! Poor little guy. And to add to what fiver said: the tear ducts, sinuses and inner ear canals are all connected. It could be as simple as fluid behind his ear drum from an allergy(that could also cause a weepy eye) to an infection. Boo needs to see a good bunny vet and be examined thoroughly.
I know it isn't popular thought with some people about rabbits but you should make sure you know that a bunny has a bacteria before treating it unless it is very clear from the symptoms. I mean no offense to others who have the opposite view. Especially those who have lost their beloved buns.
You see, here in the USA and world wide in humans doctors threw antibiotics at the slightest indication of infection and now we have all these resistant bacteria and the new resistant strains are evolving faster that there can be meds to treat them.
The same is happening in all varieties of livestock, wild AND companion animals. It's scary. We're becoming our own worse enemy.
Please get well Boo! for you Mommy too!

Re: Boo has been to the vets 03 sept
Whilst I generally agree with you gentl, in the case of rabbits with head tilt I think it is safer to give the panacur first. Panacur seems fairly safe as a medication and e.c. is the hardest to treat of the possibilities of causes. If you look up head tilt on medi rabbit you will see lots of different differentials for the causes of head tilt. I would say it is worth getting your vet to test for e.c. and pasturella and all the other options as it is important you know what the others have been exposed to. It will take a few days to get the results anyway so you aren't loosing time by getting tests. And it will be important if the girls have been cleaning his gunky eye then they could have picked up infection and may need preventative treatment.
On the wonk is concerned primarily with head tilt and their members have knowledge wider than just e.c. Their membership includes at least one vet and the site is admined by Ros from RWAF. So I would encourage you to post and ask questions as they are more likely to be able to give informed answers.

With a head tilt, if it's an ear infection or e.cuniculi I would put the rabbit on Panacur ASP.

I wish more vets were rabbit savvy! Especially in the UK where they are such popular pets! I'm going to do some more reading on head tilt. It seems particularly vicious and debilitating. Poor bunnies.

Re: Boo has been to the vets 03 sept
I took Boo to the vets this morning, his heart was listened to and was good, his ears were looked at and are very clean and clear. His teeth are perfect and the vet was impressed with his poo
The perfect poo I must be doing something right for my bunnies
Boo's eye is very swollen and red and the pupil is small so he is being treated for conjunctivitus with an infection behind the eye too. He has been given metacam for the inflamation and antibiotics 3 times a day for his eye. This is the first line of treatment. He is to go back next monday to be checked again unless I am worried before then and I am to take him back.
The vet said the next step if there is no improvment is the panacur however he is not sure of the usefulness of it as only 2 rabbits were treated with this with positive results so not sure how scientifically satisfactory the outcome was. I need to research this and form my own opinion.
I am reading through On the Wonk and at this point I am happy with the first line of treatment being offered. His eye looked looked terribly sore and inflammed. I pruned the apple tree (quite drastically) and left it on the lawn for the buns to demolish so a part of me wonders if it is an eye trauma injury from too much binkying near the branches (i hope)
Thank you very much for all your vibes and input. Gentl - i can see your point of view about bombarding with medication causing resistence. I think this is a valid point as it Cheryls, so thank you both for your input.

Re: Boo has been to the vets 03 sept
If the eye is very very red it could very well be trauma , it's the head tilt that worries me.
I remember our Bridge Danny starting off with a very swollen eye and it got to the point where his eyeball looked as if it was going to pop out and it was an Retrobulbar abscess ( abscess behind the eye) and the pressure was pushing the eyeball forward we were told he may lose the eye but after treatment and care he made a total recovery.
If Boo has conjunctivitus the metacam and antibiotics should clear it up nicely
Topping up the 'eye' Vibes for Boo xxxxxxxx
