Myxi on our doorstep
To anyone in Northumberland/Tyne and Wear or County Durham:
Myxi is spreading fast. In Cramlington alone, at least 30 bunnies have been put to sleep because of it in a really short space of time. It's spread into Newcastle now too.
PLEASE VACCINATE!
Well, that goes to everyone reading it, wherever you are.
And I know, I'm probably preaching to the converted...

Re: Myxi on our doorstep
Im so scared, there have been lots of bunnies pts near me too. Ive tried so many times and failed with some of the people at college, it makes me sick. How can they know the risk and still not care enough to vaccinate.

Re: Myxi on our doorstep
It's frustrating isn't it Sophia? Sometimes it feels like banging your head against a brick wall would be more productive.
All we can do is try.
I'm banging on about it on FB and twitter!

Re: Myxi on our doorstep
Ok, I'm gonna put my neck on the line here..........
My buns have always been vaccinated, every year, all of them. Bit of a pain in the **** going back and forth with 6 buns, but i put money aside each month to cover the cost. And I did it for their safety and well being and my peice of mind.
A couple of months ago me and DH were hit with a scarily huge bill that ran into thousands. We made cut backs in all areas, one of those areas was rabbit vaccinations. (this happened after Tilly joined our family) I cannot afford at this time to vaccinate 7 buns and their previous vaccinations have expired. Should I rehome my buns? Should I keep them and leave them unvaccinated? Should I pick out 2 or 3 to vaccinate from a top hat and leave the others unvaccinated? I see mozzies buzzing about and it worries me a lot. One myxi/vhd rabbit will wipe out all 7 of my very much loved buns. We saved for Tilly's spay and we could save for her vaccinations but what about the other 6? How can I choose who to save? Should I rehome them even though I love them very much and I want them to stay with me where they will be cared for and loved for the rest of their lives? It's not as black and white as it seems

Re: Myxi on our doorstep
Is there no organization that will do lo cost/no cost immunizations since there is an epidemic? One would think that they would do this to help save the wildies.
My heart goes out to you. I thank God often that we do not have this dreadful disease in the USA.

Re: Myxi on our doorstep
Oh sweetheart, what a horrid situation to find yourself in. There have been no outbreaks where I live thank goodness, at least, none I have heard about. Binky is up to date with his vaccinations even though he is an indoor bun. Not so easy when you have a few though and some ghastly bills come in. I don't know what to say really hun, if Iwere you I would keep my bunnies because myxi can strike anywhere and they are oved and cared for you so much. This is Just my vopinion but I hope it helps. Also if I had any spare mioney, I would send it to you.
I agree with you Gentl love, it is all greed these days isn;t it? You would indeed think they would help by cutting the costs.

Re: Myxi on our doorstep
It's so scary. I've many mozzies here and my buns are overdue by a month or so for both vaccs but because they've had runny bottoms haven't taken them down obviously because they aren't well enough.

Re: Myxi on our doorstep
It's very scary. We are trying to raise some money to get all of the pawz buns vaccinated. 3 have been, due to having been at an increased risk, so we're working to be able to afford to vaccinate the remainder.
Maysie - here's hoping so too.
My vet has some special offers on the vaccination at the moment, I hope it helps convince people to get it done.
I know what it is like to have to make a judgement as to what you can save money on when things are tight. Last year I was late with my 2 after losing my job. Eventually we had room on a credit card to get it done. I can't imagine what it must be like to be worried about 7

It cost us over £400 to get all our's vaccinated against Myxi/VHD and that's with a discount. There is no way we could afford to have them vaccinated twice for Myxi in a year.
Baby Saint is the only one that is not vaccinated and we can't vaccinate her because of her low immune system which is a worry especially with her being incontinent but we check her all the time and make sure her bottom is clean.

I know it will be expensive, but is there no possible way you could raise the funds somehow? Have you any more art work you could sell? Or DVDs/CDs etc you could sell on eBay? Could you beg your vet to let you pay up what you can't pay up front? If your vet refuses, are there others in the area you could try?
Might the PDSA help?

I went to book in my buns for their combi vacs (my sister has agreed to lend me the money ) and it turns out the rexes and Vince are covered till end of Nov for myxi and VHD! I thought they had expired! So Faline, Hazel and Matilda are booked in for friday morning I don;t feel like such a bad bun mum anymore and I don't need to borrow so much from my sister plus I can save for the other 4 to be dne in Nov. Phew!

Re: Myxi on our doorstep
It is a real worry Sue! I missed your reply, sorry. Would you be able to save money by ordering the vaccinations and vaccinating yourself? Im not sure how you go about setting that up, but im sure you would save some money. I believe Maysie does it this way? I also know a few other people with lots of buns that vaccinate themselves.
Im just catching up with this thread, and its fab that you are able to have them all vaccinated now, at least you will also save some money, as the others dont need vaccinating just yet. As you have 6, would your vet not give you a discount if you get them all vaccinated at the same time?

That's good news
A guy at my old work thought that a rabbit could only catch myxi from another rabbit, I can't believe his last rabbit lived for so long

Re: Myxi on our doorstep
I didn'trealsie you could have an arrangement to vaccinate them yourselves if you have several buns. How do you go about that? Mind you, at their vaccination they get a health check too which is peace of mind and gives you the chance to run any health questions past the vet.

Re: Myxi on our doorstep
You can buy prescription meds from Vet UK if your vet is willing to write the prescription (which they will almost certainly charge for - how much depends on the vet). Then I think the combi vaccine is just a sub-cutaneous injection, like my Humum gives me for my antibiotics. The old myxi vaccine was trickier to give as you needed to get 10% (I think) of it *just* under the skin.Vince the bunny wrote:I didn'trealsie you could have an arrangement to vaccinate them yourselves if you have several buns. The benefit of the vet doing it is, as you say, the health check but also the vaccination card should your buns ever need to go into boarding. But that's easy for us to say at £20 a jab rather than £35-ish...

Re: Myxi on our doorstep
I managed to find out that p@H have opened a new branch in Bristol and the Companion Care vets is doing the combi vac for £20 each until the end of the month so Tilly, Faline and Hazel are booked in for friday and I can get the others done in november at the rspca who charge £23. That gives me plenty of time to save for them, so panic over. I feel so much better knowing my buns are protected.
