Potential husbun for Tilly
following on from my other thread about finding a husbun for Tilly (providing he passes his dental check whilst being neutered and I pass the home check), here is the little boy that may be joining our family
He was a P@H purchase and the owners left him with his mum (who is on pregnancy watch)> They didn't know how to look after them or how to handle them so gave them in to the RSPCA. He only came in a few days ago, he is lovely and I had a nice cuddle with him
Can you help me name him?

He is very very cute How about Diamond - it is diamond shaped patch!
Can I ask what would happen to him if his teeth are an issue?

Re: Potential husbun for Tilly
Ha ha! Could call him Neil as in Neil Diamond
I think I am going to call him Herbie. Herbert and Matilda, Tilly and Herbie for short
Sixer, they get pts if they have dental issues so fingers crossed he hasn't.

He is gorgeous I can't believe they get pts if they have dental issues when there's someone who's willing to take him home that's really upset me

Re: Potential husbun for Tilly
The reason behind it is the trauma to the bunny undergoing GA every few months or however often it needs doing. If it's just minor spurs they don't pts but if quite bad then they do. the woman said buns generally can undergo 2 GA and then it gets too much and they tend to die.
I don't know anything about this so it's not my opinion, just what I was told.

Re: Potential husbun for Tilly
I don't think that is a rspca wide policy. It may be worth concating HQ and ask them. I do feel that some of the branches need updating on rabbit issues.

What a crock of ****!!! I know you're just repeating what was said to you VTB, but what are they on?! Lots of buns have regular GA's and are fine! A few HH bunnies spring to mind!!Vince the bunny wrote:The reason behind it is the trauma to the bunny undergoing GA every few months or however often it needs doing. Of course, in an ideal world, nobun would ever need a GA and there will unfortunately be occasions when a bun doesn't survive a GA, be it their 1st, 3rd or 7th. I'd love to know where she's getting her statistics about them tending to die after the second!
I agree with Rachel, how they can still (possibly, lets hope not!) have him PTS knowing he has a home to go to is incomprehensible!
I immediately thought Patch, then Sox!

I am loving his green ear!
He does lend himself to an old fashioned name. I like Herbert, but not shortened! Or something like Norman (he looks like he may well do some stormin) or George.

BTW I have contacted RSPCA HQ about the dental issue and asked them to investigate. I have also contacted the RWAF as I felt they may also be interested.

I had an awful feeling that this was going to be your answer, as I have heard of another RSPCA branch with this policy, albeit some time ago
I am extremely taken aback that you have been allowed to consider adopting this bun but at the same are told that he will be PTS if there are tooth problems. Tooth problems that may well be held in check once he is on as good a diet as possible. I hope this little guy makes it to your's. If you have set your heart on him I would tell the RSPCA that you will have him regardless. All of my buns have had multiple GA's, Herbie the most at 4, 3 of these being for dentals.
Cheryl - thanks for flagging this up to RSPCA HQ.

Re: Potential husbun for Tilly
He is beautiful, love his diamond marking. And also think he suits Herbert
That is an awful policy regarding his teeth. Mo came from the RSPCA and our branch said nothing about them being PTS with tooth problems, mind you I wasn't particularly happy about the foster conditions Mojo was in either so it seems the RSPCA do need to tighten up a bit. The homechecker was lovely though and agreed that Mojo's accomodation at the foster home wasn't the best.

Re: Potential husbun for Tilly
Sixer, the girl who showed me around wasn't supposed to have shown him to me. The lady who took my details afterwards said they do not show potential new owners the bunnies in quarenteen incase they get pts. So really I shouldn't know about him.
I'm glad I do though
Cheryl, I didn't realise not all RSPCA branches had this policy. Another local rescue to me in Wiltshire does the same. I'd be interested to know their response.

Re: Potential husbun for Tilly
What a beautiful little bunny
I'm guessing the PTS policy with dental bunnies is that they are hard to home so the rescue/RSPCA branch gets stuck with them and they are expensive. I know of rabbits that have had GA dentals on monthly basis, one who had over 30 GA dentals. The first rabbit I owned had malocclusion of incisors and when she needed her second dental 12 weeks after the first the vet offered to PTS - it was purely a financial decision, not based on what was good for her.... she coped really well with the 10 GAs she had in her lifetime.
Sadly, I suppose it's a case of there aren't enough homes for all the bunnies in rescue so the dental ones stand little chance of a home
