An awful evening - healing vibes please?
Lexy (our hamster) had begun making squeaking noises, a sign of distress. I took her to the vet.
She was very distressed and very hard for the vet to examine. Eventually she wriggled free and jumped off the table. It was awful. She appeared to have a fit, and lost her ability to balance. For a while it looked like she would have to be pts immediately. OH wasn't well so I was at the vet alone and was in a terrible state. We gave lexy time to settle and thankfully she regained her balance and seemed to be none the worse for wear for that.
Anyway, it seems she has pyometria, which is a uterine infection and is very difficult to treat. The best treatment is hysterectomy, which they possibly would have done if she was a bit younger. As it is, we have antibiotics for her, but the vet has warned us the success rate is low, and it is very likely it will recur.
It seems we have to prepare for the idea lexy may not be with us much longer.
Please could we have some healing hopper vibes?
People might think she's "only a hamster" and we could have bought 4 for the amount the vet cost, but lexy is a member of our family and it's been quite an upsetting evening.

Sending loads and loads of vibes to Lexy, and hugs to her mummy. I hope she can defy all odds and make it through this
It must have been so awful to see her so distressed
I totally get you. Lots of times people say to me "You could buy loads of rabbits with the money you spend on yours", but at the end of the day it's not about how much they cost - it is about what they give to you in terms of love and enjoyment. They DO become a part of your family and their health, to me, is priceless.

Sending mega vibes for Lexy! Be sure to keep her warm. We learned the hard way that they can get shocky with an infection.
Sending vibes for your OH as well and for you!

Re: An awful evening - healing vibes please? Update: perking up
Thanks everyone
Lexy is still with us (I was quite worried that with the stress etc she might not make it, especially as she was very quiet last night).
We're having a bit of trouble making sure she takes her antibiotics. We've tried putting the Baytril on a grape, but that didn't seem to work brilliantly, so now we've tried a little grape juice (vet recommended grape products).
I may get odd looks, but when we take her back on Tuesday I'm taking the washing up bowl, with the idea that she can be examined in there and it'll be harder for her to jump.

Re: An awful evening - healing vibes please? Update: perking up
We think we will be saying goodbye to lexy on Tuesday. She's not herself. She's barely left her nest since we got in last night.
I can't help but blame myself. She was ok until she jumped off the table. Obviously there was the infection, but she had still been ok in herself.

Re: An awful evening - healing vibes please? Update: perking up
OH says Lexy is taking her meds well, and seems to be perking up a bit.
The vet said this could happen, she could perk up temporarily, so we're being cautious with optimism, but it's nice to see her pootling around her cage again, rather than spending all her time in her nest as she has been.

OH says she's been taking the baytril well, she is enjoying the grape juice we put it in and apparently she was having a wander round her cage. I've been wondering if she's been hurt by the fall, and staying in bed to recover, but is now feeling better. Hopefully meds sorting infection too.

Re: An awful evening - healing vibes please? Update: perking up
I'm glad she is taking her meds! It's hard to give them their meds sometimes! My son had a hammy named Mr. Nibbles and one named Princess Leia. We had the hardest time getting meds down them.
Our vet was a country vet and though he loved animals he could barely keep a straight face when we came in doing CPR on Leia. And yes, I did mouth-to-mouth. It was not the time to explain to my son that her heart was bearing over 400 times a minute so we couldn't hear it with my stethoscope. Mother's do some strange things to make their children happy. Princess Leia was revived with some epinephrine and did well. We had to keep her warm though. I had to carry her next to me. The vet was quite serious when he told me to settle her in my bra. There was a space for her between TMI .
