Poorly Clover
My little Clover has snuffles She had white discharge coming from her nose but her eyes were completely fine. She's been to the vets and after he saw her crusty nose he wanted to treat her for syphilis. She had an antibiotic injection while at the vets and we made an appointment to start her having the injections that'll get rid of syphilis. This is what she looked like when her nose was all crusty
While I was washing her paws (they were caked in crusty snot) I managed to get the crust off her nose, she wouldn't let me or the vet go near it before but I guess having her paws washed freaked her out so much she gave up and let me do it. There wasn't any bleeding or soreness so it definitely wasn't scabs. I went back to the vets as her eyes started leaking and she had another antibiotic injection and is now on baytril once a day for 10 days. The vet still wants to give her injections for syphilis but I don't think it's that.
This is what her nose looks like now, her eyes aren't too bad, just a bit of discharge. Her nose is still a bit crusty but it's a million times better than it was
Anyway this morning was the first morning that I haven't had to clear her nose for her! The past few days she had been breathing through her mouth because her nose was getting too blocked so I was having to clear it twice a day. Hopefully she'll keep improving
She is separated from her partner Rocky at the minute but she had been with him about a week ago when her nose was starting to get bad. I think if he was going to catch it he would have already. Should I still keep her separate or put them back together? His nose and eyes are perfectly fine even though he had been with her recently. I think maybe her immune system just isn't as good as his. My netherland dwarf occasionally gets a bit of white discharge from his nose but he gets over it within a couple of days and his partner never shows any symptoms.

Re: Poorly Clover
Aw poor Clover
I am a pasteurella bun, but that is a *lot* of discharge so I don't think she has the same.
Did the vet do any swabs for tests before putting her on antibiotics? Although the treatment for pasteurella would be the same anyway. I assume he listened to her chest and it is not congested? Mouth breathing always sends my Humum into a panic.
It is definitely the case that a lower immune system would allow something like this to get hold of a bun, whereas a healthy one would fight it off. Is she a stressy bun? Echinacea (which you can buy as dried coneflower) can help support the immune system and reduce stress in a poorly bun.
Lots of vibes for her - she is a sweetie

Re: Poorly Clover
It does look very much like syphillis. According to the Rabbit network the skin does get very crusty (as opposed to scabby).

I hope the treatment works well for her. Lots of Vibes coming her way.

Re: Poorly Clover
I agree with Cheryl - I think if the vet wants to give her the syphillis injections then you should let her Hun.

Re: Poorly Clover
Thanks guys
Vet didn't do any swabs, he did listen to her chest and he said it's fine. He also checked her bottom because usually with syphilis I think their genitals get sore and crusty but she's fine. I did read somewhere that there's a version of rabbit syphilis that only affects the face so I guess it could be that. Hoping this baytril keeps working but she'll have the syphilis injections just to be sure
She isn't a stressy bun as far as I know, i've only had her since last Friday though! Here's a nice photo of her with Rocky
Should I put her back with him yet or still keep her separate?

Re: Poorly Clover
I don't know if she should go back in with him ro not but would assume not as syphilis is contagious I believe it may cause him problems but as I say not sure but I would err on the side of caution myself.
I never even realised buns get this till I see a thread a short while ago mention it
nose rubs for her and mega vibes

Re: Poorly Clover
Clover is such a beauty even with a crusty nose. Sending mega get well vibes for her. Be sure you wash your hands real well. Her immune system must be very low and she would be susceptible to other things.

Re: Poorly Clover
Bless her - my Herbie had syphilis - it started about 5 months after he came to us and was probably caused by stress as he was being bullied by his partner at the time. His tear ducts were blocked too but whether this was due to the syphilis I am not sure.
His face didn't look as crusty as that but like Clover his genitals were unaffected. It very very quickly cleared up with the antiobiotics and touchwood it has not returned. I can't remember whether it is contagious, I don't seem to think it is - I do remember reading that the mother passes it on to the kits as they are born.
If Clover's nose is still bunged up you could try adding some Bisolvon (from vets) to her food as it is help to clear the nose.
Am sending loads of healing vibes.

Re: Poorly Clover
Thanks everyone
Clover has been virtually snot-free for 2 days now! So glad she's easily breathing again, it was horrible seeing her struggle so much. She's still got a week left of baytril to get through and has a check-up at the vets on Tuesday when she's meant to be starting injections for syphilis. Going to ask the vet when I should put her back with Rocky, will be lovely to see them together again! Poor Rocky, he only had her as a partner for around 3 days before I separated her because of her illness. He was really enjoying her company so he must be missing her

Re: Poorly Clover
Here is Clover now
She seems 100% better! Check up at vets today but everything's looking good.
Her nose has lost a tiny bit of fur but she's doing great
