Why chewy bunny, why??
Why after so many months being (relatively) good has Molly started chewing the wood work in the house at every given opportunity?!?
She's driving me spare
The only thing that has changed here is that I've stopped giving them excel Herbage hay. Surely it can't be that?!?! They are still getting plenty of hay and they are tucking into all 3 kinds that they get.
I really don't know what to do with her. I've tried the bitter apple spray and it deters her for about half an hour I can't cover my whole house with it anyway. They've got all the usual chewy items too, hay tunnel, kitchen roll tubes, cardboard, their castle, what's left of their willow ring.
Any ideas/suggestions? She's starting to drag Junior down to her norty level
Help meeeee pleaseeeeee!!!

Re: Why chewy bunny, why??
put a nose cam on her and you can watch catch her early
but seriously I have no idea as what stops one has no effect on the other giving her things to deter her like toys etc you have already tried maybe it's a teenage thing with her

Re: Why chewy bunny, why??
Oh dear My theory is that bunnies can't (or won't!) differentiate between what is allowed to be chewed and what isn't. Our conservatory once bore testament to that.
I am not convinced sprays etc make any difference. I think you either have to carry out extensive bunny proofing, accept the damage or find a way to teach her that some things are off limits. When Gabriel and Spring were busy trashing the conservatory I went with the middle option, but I was safe in the knowledge that it was on the list of rooms to re-vamp.
Good luck.

Re: Why chewy bunny, why??
Hector is a nightmare for chewing. The bitter apple spray doesn't bother him at all, and he's been really bad lately the only thing that stops him is squirting him with a bit of water.

Olbas oil! Smells at first but then goes away. It's the only thing that worked with daisy.

Re: Why chewy bunny, why??
Oh don't even talk to me about chewy bunnies. I didn't realise our bedroom door was open yesterday & a certain bunny had a field day at the back of my computer & I know for a fact he knows he shouldn't have been there because as soon as I walked in he scarpered. I could really do without that expense & I'm kicking myself now!
Bunny proofing is all I have done that's worked...except when your not paying attention!

Re: Why chewy bunny, why??
Thanks for all the replies. She wasn't too bad the night after I posted. I'm sure she just likes to make sure we're talking about her and that nobody has forgotten about her
Or maybe it was because I had the water spray bottle at hand I know some of you won't agree with it, but like Zo said, it seems to be the only thing that stops her and needs must.
It's not like I get her wet and then send her outside aftewards. She only goes as far as her cozy bedroom!

Re: Why chewy bunny, why??
I read Olbas oil wasn't a good idea but if it has been tried and tested with no ill effects, it might be worth a go.
I will persevere with the water bottle for now though, or I'll have to cover my entire house in olbas oil

Re: Why chewy bunny, why??
Water does work. My two house bunnies have decided all of a sudden that their rug tastes nice. No idea why, they never chewed the old rug and they didn't this one for months, then suddenly they decided it was a good idea. I have a plant sprayer, so its just a mist not a squirt, and if I pick it up they stop. They know they aren't allowed to do it, they just try their luck!!
And also, any amount of bunny proofing doesn't stop a rabbit doing something that they really want to do. Florence has learned how to remove cable protectors to get to the cables underneath. A small matter of cable protectors doesn't stop her!

Re: Why chewy bunny, why??
I use something like this
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PLANT-SPRAYER-GREEN-HOUSE-SPRAYER-500ml-/320672195987?pt=UK_Home_Garden_GardenEquipment_HandTools_SM&hash=item4aa98d6593
And as someone whos ex has a plant business, I can assure you that one of these is actually useless watering plants. It's a mist it sprays, it barely gets them wet, and doesn't at all now as I only have to pick it up.

Re: Why chewy bunny, why??
Exactly!! The purpose of the water spray is to distract them from chewing

Re: Why chewy bunny, why??
This thread has been heavily moderated and returned to the forum. Any repeat of previous postings on it and it will be locked. Accusations of cruelty are extremely serious and flinging them about frivolously is not only insulting but demeaning in the face of what domestic rabbits face in the UK on a daily basis.
In many cases training is entirely necessary in the house rabbit for their own safety. It is important to be able to get them to stop what they are doing almost instantly...what if they had managed to get hold of a stray wire? We are also well aware that they have the mental capacity to accept basic training and make connections between positive behaviour and rewards (clicker training), and negative behaviour and punishments.
Using water as a deterrent in a form that has less impact that a outdoor rain shower is not going to phase most rabbits, they'll barely even feel it through their coats. However, they usually learn it precedes you coming to verbally reprimand or physically remove them and that is what they tend to react to, it's a sign that something they don't want to happen is likely to be forth coming. On that basis, I fail to see it as a form of cruelty.
If this thread deviates back to being nothing more than an argument it will be locked. Warnings have been issued. Please take heed of them.
